When and Where to Use ‘HAD’
The most important rule is that we use HAD to talk about an action in the past that happened before another action in the past. It helps to show the order of events.
Example 1:
“The train had left when I arrived at the station.”
First Action: The train left. (This happened first, so we use had left).
Second Action: I arrived. (This happened later, so we use the simple past arrived).
Example 2:
“She had finished her homework before she watched TV.”
First Action: She finished her homework. (Uses had finished).
Second Action: She watched TV. (Uses simple past watched).
Look for signal words like before, after, when, by the time, and already. These often mean you need to use the Past Perfect tense with HAD.
