Learning: Voiced /ð/ vs. Voiceless /θ/

Both “th” sounds are made with your tongue lightly touching your top front teeth.

  • /θ/ Voiceless (as in ‘think’): Only air passes through. Your throat does not vibrate. Hold a hand to your throat to check. Examples: “think”, “three”, “bath“, “thin”.
  • /ð/ Voiced (as in ‘this’): Your vocal cords vibrate. You should feel a “buzzing” in your throat. Examples: “this”, “that”, “mother”, “breathe”.
