Bonus: Pronunciation Task

Learning: “r” (/r/) vs. “l” (/l/)

These sounds are made in different parts of the mouth. ‘L’ is at the front, ‘R’ is in the middle.

  • /l/ (as in ‘light’): The tip of your tongue touches the ridge just behind your top front teeth. Air flows around the sides of the tongue. Examples: “light”, “lead”, “glass”, “fly”.
  • /r/ (as in ‘right’): Your lips are slightly rounded. The middle of your tongue rises towards the roof of your mouth, but it does not touch. Air flows over the center. Examples: “right”, “read”, “grass”, “fry”.
