Bonus: Pronunciation Task

Learning: “p” vs. “b”

The main difference is that ‘b’ is voiced (your vocal cords vibrate) and ‘p’ is voiceless (just a puff of air).

  • /p/ (as in ‘pie’): A puff of air comes from your lips. Hold a piece of paper in front of your mouth; it should move. Your throat should not vibrate. Examples: “pin”, “park”, “lap“.
  • /b/ (as in ‘buy’): Your lips do the same motion, but you make the sound with your vocal cords. The paper should not move much. You should feel a vibration in your throat. Examples: “bin”, “bark”, “lab“.
