Learning: “ch” (/tʃ/) vs. “sh” (/ʃ/)

These two sounds are very different. ‘ch’ is a quick stop sound, while ‘sh’ is a long hissing sound.

  • /tʃ/ (as in ‘choose’): Your tongue quickly touches the roof of your mouth, just behind your teeth, to stop the air, then releases it. Examples: “chin”, “chair”, “teach“.
  • /ʃ/ (as in ‘shoes’): Your tongue rises to the roof of your mouth but doesn’t touch. Air flows continuously, making a “hissing” sound. Examples: “shin”, “share”, “wash“.
