These short vowel sounds can be tricky. Pay attention to your jaw and tongue.

  • /æ/ (as in ‘cat’): Open your mouth wide. Your jaw drops down. Your tongue is flat and low in your mouth. Examples: “cat”, “bad”, “hat”, “map”.
  • /ʌ/ (as in ‘cut’): Your mouth is more relaxed and not as open. Your tongue is in a neutral, central position. Examples: “cut”, “bud”, “hut”, “mup”.
