Learning: Plural & 3rd Person ‘s’

The ‘s’ ending has three sounds, based on the final sound of the base word.

  • /s/ sound: After voiceless sounds (p, k, t, f). e.g., “cats”, “stops”, “laughs”.
  • /z/ sound: After voiced sounds (b, d, g, v, l, m, n, r) & all vowel sounds. e.g., “dogs”, “plays”, “loves”.
  • /ɪz/ sound: After sibilant sounds (s, z, sh, ch, j). e.g., “buses”, “watches”, “judges”.
