Learning: Word Stress

In English, one syllable in a word is stressed more than others. This is key to sounding natural. Sometimes, the stress changes the word’s meaning (e.g., noun vs. verb).

  • Noun: Stress is often on the first syllable. (e.g., RE-cord, PRE-sent)
  • Verb: Stress is often on the second syllable. (e.g., re-CORD, pre-SENT)

Pronunciation Test
