Learning: Silent Letters

In English, some letters in words are not pronounced. They are “silent”. Knowing these helps you pronounce words correctly.

  • K is often silent before ‘n’: knife, know, knock
  • B is often silent after ‘m’ or before ‘t’: comb, thumb, doubt, debt
  • W is often silent before ‘r’: write, wrong, wrap
  • L is often silent in words like: calm, half, talk, would
