Learning: “t” /t/ vs. “d” /d/

This pair is about voicing. Your tongue is in the same place for both, but for /d/, your vocal cords vibrate.

  • /t/ (as in ‘tin’): Your tongue taps the ridge behind your top teeth. Only air comes out (voiceless). Examples: “tin”, “try”, “mat“.
  • /d/ (as in ‘din’): Your tongue taps the same place, but you use your voice (voiced). You should feel a vibration in your throat. Examples: “din”, “dry”, “mad“.
