The “j” sound is a hard stop, while the “z” sound is a continuous buzz.
- /dʒ/ (as in ‘judge’): Your tongue taps the roof of your mouth to stop the air, then releases it (like “ch” but voiced). Examples: “jam”, “jeep”, “badge”, “cage”.
- /z/ (as in ‘zoo’): Your tongue stays close to the roof of your mouth and air buzzes continuously. Examples: “zoo”, “zip”, “buzz“, “case” (as in ‘his cases’).
