Learning: “p” /p/ vs. “f” /f/

These two sounds are both voiceless (no throat vibration), but they use different parts of your mouth.

  • /p/ (as in ‘pan’): Your lips press together and release a puff of air. Examples: “pan”, “pig”, “cup“, “jump“.
  • /f/ (as in ‘fan’): Your top teeth touch your bottom lip, and air hisses through. Examples: “fan”, “fig”, “cuff“, “laugh“.
