Learning: “f” /f/ vs. “v” /v/

This pair has the exact same mouth shape. The only difference is voicing.

  • /f/ (as in ‘fan’): Top teeth gently touch the bottom lip. Air is pushed through (voiceless). Your throat does not vibrate. Examples: “fan”, “leaf“, “safe”.
  • /v/ (as in ‘van’): Same mouth shape (top teeth on bottom lip), but you use your voice (voiced). You should feel a vibration in your throat. Examples: “van”, “leave”, “save”.
