Learning: “s” /s/ vs. “z” /z/
This pair has the same mouth shape. The only difference is voicing (vibration in your throat).
- /s/ (as in ‘sun’): Air flows through your teeth. Your throat does not vibrate. Examples: “sun”, “bus“, “price”, “lace”.
- /z/ (as in ‘zoo’): Same mouth shape, but you use your voice. You should feel a “buzzing” vibration in your throat. Examples: “zoo”, “buzz“, “prize”, “lazy”.
