Learning: “sh” /ʃ/ vs. “ch” /tʃ/

“sh” is a continuous hissing sound. “ch” is a short, stopping sound.

  • /ʃ/ (as in ‘shoe’): Your tongue pulls back, lips round, and air flows continuously (“shhh”). Examples: “shoe”, “ship”, “wash“, “fish“.
  • /tʃ/ (as in ‘chew’): Your tongue taps the roof of your mouth to stop air, then releases it (“tch”). Examples: “chew”, “chip”, “watch“, “catch“.
