Lesson 1: Tales of Bhola Grandpa

1. Let’s Read (চলো পড়ি)

Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village. A large bokal tree overshadowed their hut. In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys. Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind it.

One moonlit night, we were returning from a festival. The road was long and foggy. I was riding on the village chowkidar’s shoulders. Suddenly, Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail. Everyone in our party was surprised. We halted. Enquiry revealed that Bhola Grandpa had taken his grandson to the festival. He had tightly held on to the two fingers of the boy. He did not realize when those fingers slipped out. Then someone asked Bhola Grandpa what he was gripping. He remembered his grandson and let out a loud wail.

My father chose two sharp-eyed men from our party to go back with Bhola Grandpa to the festival. The grandson was found before long. He had taken a cosy shelter under a cow’s belly.

I remember another funny incident about Bhola Grandpa related by my father. It had been a rainy afternoon. Bhola Grandpa, wild with excitement, told my father and his friends that he had seen a gang of pirates. They were burying a large box under one of the sand dunes. At once father and his friends started looking for the hidden treasure. Evening passed on to night. A pack of jackals were howling. It was past midnight. At this point, Bhola Grandpa confessed that there was no real treasure. It was all a dream which he had during his midday nap.

Once Bhola Grandpa had a great adventure in the Sunderbans. In those days Royal Bengal tigers freely roamed the dense jungles. People took care to move about only in groups, particularly after sundown. One evening, Bhola Grandpa was returning from the weekly market. Suddenly at a distance of about five yards behind him, he heard the growl of a Royal Bengal tiger. Bhola Grandpa turned and found the bright gaze of the tiger on his face.

Bhola Grandpa instantly climbed up a nearby banyan tree. The tiger roared and circled the tree about a hundred times. Then it settled down under a bush without taking its eyes off him. With nightfall, the forest grew dark and silent. Bhola Grandpa could hear the tiger beating its tail on the dry leaves. Hours passed. Dawn broke with the cooing of doves. Bhola Grandpa came down. He saw a group of men on a mound. He requested the first man he saw for some water. The man was bewildered. “What is your secret that you simply walked past the hungry beast and it did nothing?” he asked.

The tiger was stretching its limbs and yawning. Then, Bhola Grandpa remembered the tiger and looked at it. Bhola Grandpa almost lost his senses in fear. He ran back home. Half a century later, Bhola Grandpa left us forever one morning at the age of ninety-five. His eighty-year old wife lamented much. She said with a sigh, “The old man must have forgotten to breathe.”

2. What We Learn (আমরা যা শিখি)

Forgetfulness and Simplicity

The story is a humorous look at Bhola Grandpa, whose extreme forgetfulness leads to chaotic and funny situations. It shows how simple, innocent, and absent-minded people can perceive the world differently.

The Nature of Fear and Reality

A key theme is how fear is perceived. Bhola Grandpa forgets to be afraid of the tiger until he remembers it. His absent-mindedness makes him “braver” than a normal person, showing the gap between a real threat and our *perception* of it.

Humour in Everyday Life

The story hinges on humour derived from simple, everyday situations—losing a grandson at a festival, mixing up dreams with reality, and even a comical final remark about “forgetting to breathe.” It reminds us that life is full of absurd and funny moments.

Long Answer Questions (Big)

1. Describe the incident where Bhola Grandpa lost his grandson at the festival.

One moonlit night, while returning from a festival, Bhola Grandpa suddenly let out a loud wail. It was discovered that he had taken his grandson to the festival and was holding the boy's fingers tightly. However, due to his forgetful nature, he did not realize when the boy's fingers slipped out of his grip. He only remembered his grandson when someone asked him what he was gripping. This led to a search party being sent back to the festival to find the child.

2. How was the grandson finally recovered after being lost?

After Bhola Grandpa realized his grandson was missing, the narrator's father chose two sharp-eyed men from their party to accompany Bhola Grandpa back to the festival grounds. The search did not take long because the boy had found a very unusual but safe spot. He had taken a "cosy shelter" under the belly of a cow, where he was waiting safely until the search party arrived to rescue him.

3. Narrate the story of the hidden treasure as told by Bhola Grandpa.

On a rainy afternoon, an excited Bhola Grandpa told the narrator's father and his friends that he had seen pirates burying a large box under a sand dune. Believing him, the group spent the entire evening and part of the night searching for the treasure amidst howling jackals. However, past midnight, Bhola Grandpa confessed that there was no real treasure. He admitted that the entire episode was just a dream he had during his midday nap.

4. Describe Bhola Grandpa's encounter with the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Sunderbans.

While returning from the weekly market in the Sunderbans, Bhola Grandpa heard a tiger's growl just five yards behind him. He turned to see the tiger's bright gaze. He immediately climbed a banyan tree. The tiger roared and circled the tree a hundred times before settling under a bush. Bhola Grandpa stayed on the tree all night. At dawn, he simply walked past the sleeping/yawning tiger to a nearby mound, completely forgetting the danger until he was safely away.

5. Why was the man on the mound bewildered when he saw Bhola Grandpa?

The man on the mound was bewildered because he had watched Bhola Grandpa walk calmly past a hungry, wild Royal Bengal tiger. The tiger was stretching and yawning, but it hadn't attacked. The man couldn't understand how Bhola Grandpa had the "secret" or the courage to walk right past such a dangerous beast without being harmed, not realizing that Bhola Grandpa had simply forgotten the tiger was there.

6. What does the wife's comment at the end of the story reveal about Bhola Grandpa's character?

When Bhola Grandpa died at ninety-five, his wife remarked with a sigh, "The old man must have forgotten to breathe." This humorous and ironic statement perfectly encapsulates Bhola Grandpa's lifelong character trait: extreme forgetfulness. Throughout the story, he forgets his grandson, forgets that his treasure was a dream, and even forgets a tiger is waiting for him. His wife suggests that his final act of dying was just another instance of him forgetting a vital detail—life itself.

7. How does the author portray the setting of the Sunderbans in the story?

The Sunderbans is portrayed as a place of both beauty and danger. The author mentions "dense jungles" where Royal Bengal tigers "freely roamed." The atmosphere is described as particularly perilous after sundown, requiring people to travel in groups for safety. The night in the forest is depicted as dark and silent, broken only by the sounds of a tiger beating its tail on dry leaves or the cooing of doves at dawn.

8. Discuss the role of the narrator's father in the stories of Bhola Grandpa.

The narrator's father serves as a bridge between Bhola Grandpa’s antics and the audience. He is the one who organizes the search for the lost grandson and leads the hunt for the non-existent pirate treasure. He is also the source of the "funny incidents" the narrator remembers. His character highlights the community's patience and indulgence toward Bhola Grandpa, as they often participate in his imaginative or forgetful adventures.

9. Analyze the humor in the "Pirate Treasure" incident.

The humor lies in the contrast between the serious efforts of the men and the trivial reality of the situation. A group of grown men, including the narrator's father, spent hours in the dark, rainy night, listening to jackals and digging for treasure, all based on the word of a man known for his eccentricity. The climax of the humor is Bhola Grandpa’s casual confession at midnight that the whole thing was just a "midday nap" dream, rendering their hard work absurd.

10. What happened when Bhola Grandpa finally remembered the tiger?

After walking past the tiger and reaching a group of men on a mound, Bhola Grandpa was asked about his "secret" for surviving. It was only then that he looked back, saw the tiger stretching and yawning, and "remembered" the danger he had been in. The realization hit him so hard that he "almost lost his senses in fear" and ran all the way back home, showing that his bravery was actually just a result of his forgetfulness.

11. Describe the physical surroundings of Bhola Grandpa’s home.

Bhola Grandpa lived at the western end of the village in a humble hut. The most prominent feature of his home was a large bokal tree that provided shade to the hut. This tree was also home to a small troop of monkeys. The description suggests a simple, rural life where humans and nature (even mischievous monkeys) lived in close proximity and harmony, as Bhola Grandpa and his wife "did not mind" the monkeys.

12. Why is the story titled "Tales of Bhola Grandpa"?

The title is appropriate because the narrative is a collection of anecdotal "tales" or short stories centered around the eccentric character of Bhola Grandpa. Each tale highlights a different aspect of his personality—his forgetfulness, his vivid imagination, and his simple-hearted nature. By using the word "Tales," the author suggests a legendary or folkloric quality to the funny incidents that the village remembers about the old man.

13. Compare the two instances where Bhola Grandpa "forgets" something important.

In the first instance, he forgets his grandson’s physical presence, leading to a frantic search at a festival. In the second instance, he forgets the presence of a life-threatening tiger, which ironically allows him to walk to safety without panicking. While the first forgetfulness caused distress to his family, the second actually saved him from the paralysis of fear, though both highlight his detachment from reality.

14. What was the atmosphere like during the return from the festival?

The atmosphere was serene yet slightly eerie. It was a "moonlit night," but the road was "long and foggy." The narrator describes a sense of security, riding on the chowkidar's shoulders within a party of people. This peaceful setting is abruptly shattered by Bhola Grandpa’s "loud wail," which creates a sudden shift from calm to surprise and concern among the party members.

15. How does the author use animals to enhance the storytelling?

Animals play key roles in every major incident. Monkeys live in his tree, showing his peaceful nature. A cow provides shelter for his lost grandson, adding a touch of innocence. Jackals howling in the dark add tension to the pirate story. Finally, the Royal Bengal tiger and the cooing doves in the Sunderbans story emphasize the wild and unpredictable environment Bhola Grandpa inhabited.

16. Explain the significance of the "midday nap" in the pirate story.

The "midday nap" is the source of the entire conflict in the pirate episode. It shows that Bhola Grandpa’s dreams were so vivid that he could not distinguish them from reality. This detail highlights his innocence; he wasn't intentionally lying to his friends, he genuinely believed his dream was a real event, which makes his character more endearing rather than deceitful.

17. Describe the tiger's behavior while Bhola Grandpa was on the tree.

The tiger acted like a patient predator. It roared and circled the tree about a hundred times, indicating its frustration. Eventually, it "settled down under a bush," but kept its eyes fixed on Bhola Grandpa. Throughout the night, it remained active, as Bhola Grandpa could hear it "beating its tail on the dry leaves." By morning, it was "stretching its limbs and yawning," appearing almost domestic until Bhola Grandpa realized what it was.

18. What does the story suggest about the relationship between Bhola Grandpa and his community?

The community seems to view Bhola Grandpa with a mix of amusement, patience, and affection. Even when he leads them on a wild goose chase for treasure or loses his grandson, they don't get angry. They help him find the boy and listen to his stories. He is a central, beloved figure in the village whose eccentricities provide entertainment and shared memories for everyone.

19. How does the author create suspense in the Sunderbans story?

Suspense is created through sensory details: the "growl" heard behind him, the "bright gaze" of the tiger, and the sound of the tail on "dry leaves" in the dark, silent forest. The passage of time ("hours passed") and the tiger's persistent presence under the tree build tension, which is only released through the humorous anti-climax of Bhola Grandpa walking past the beast because he forgot it was there.

20. Summarize the personality of Bhola Grandpa in your own words based on the text.

Bhola Grandpa is a whimsical, simple-minded, and extremely forgetful elderly man. He lives a life deeply connected to his imagination, often confusing dreams with reality. Despite his age, he possesses a child-like innocence, whether he is losing his grandson or inadvertently "braving" a tiger. He is a man who lives completely in the moment—so much so that he often forgets the moment that just passed.

Common Conceptual Mistakes & Pitfalls

Common Student MistakeCorrect Understanding
Confusing the Bokal tree with the Banyan tree. The Bokal tree was at Bhola Grandpa's home (with monkeys). The Banyan tree was in the Sunderbans (where he hid from the tiger).
Thinking the pirates and treasure were real.Bhola Grandpa admitted it was all a dream he had during his midday nap. There was no real treasure.
Believing Bhola Grandpa was brave for walking past the tiger. He didn't walk past out of bravery; he simply forgot the tiger was there until he was reminded later.
Misidentifying where the grandson was found. The grandson was found taking "cosy shelter" under a cow's belly, not just lost in the crowd.
Taking the wife's final comment literally. When she said he "forgot to breathe," she was making a humorous remark on his lifelong habit of forgetfulness.
