এই গল্পটি একজন নামহীন কথকের চোখে দেখা এক অসাধারণ মানুষের কাহিনী। কথক ১৯১৩ সালে ফ্রান্সের প্রোভঁস (Provence) অঞ্চলের এক জনশূন্য, শুষ্ক ও desolate এলাকায় পদব্রজে ভ্রমণ করছিলেন। জল শেষ হয়ে যাওয়ায় তিনি যখন আশ্রয়ের খোঁজ করছিলেন, তখন তাঁর সাথে এলজিয়ার্ড বুফিয়ার (Elzéard Bouffier) নামে এক মেষপালকের দেখা হয়।
কথক দেখেন যে, এলজিয়ার্ড অত্যন্ত যত্ন সহকারে একশোটি ওক ফলের বীজ (acorn) বাছাই করে পরের দিন সেগুলি লাগানোর জন্য প্রস্তুত করছেন। এলজিয়ার্ড জানান যে, গত তিন বছর ধরে তিনি এই জনশূন্য প্রান্তরে একা একা গাছ লাগিয়ে চলেছেন।
প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর কথক আবার সেই অঞ্চলে ফিরে আসেন। তিনি অবাক হয়ে দেখেন যে, এলজিয়ার্ডের লাগানো বীজগুলি এক বিশাল নতুন জঙ্গলে পরিণত হয়েছে। সেই জঙ্গলের প্রভাবে ওই অঞ্চলের জলবায়ু বদলে গেছে, শুকিয়ে যাওয়া ঝর্ণাগুলিতে আবার জল এসেছে এবং চারিদিক সবুজে ভরে উঠেছে। এরপর বহু বছর ধরে কথক মাঝে মাঝে সেখানে ফিরে গেছেন এবং দেখেছেন যে, একজন মানুষের নিঃস্বার্থ এবং নিরলস প্রচেষ্টায় একটি মৃতপ্রায় অঞ্চল কীভাবে生命 ও আনন্দে পরিপূর্ণ হয়ে উঠেছে।
English Summary
The story follows an unnamed narrator who, while hiking through a desolate, barren region of Provence, France, in 1913, meets a solitary shepherd named Elzéard Bouffier. The narrator observes Bouffier meticulously sorting and planting one hundred acorns each day. Bouffier reveals he has been doing this alone in the wilderness for three years.
After fighting in World War I, the narrator returns years later to find the landscape transformed by a young forest. Bouffier's silent, selfless, and persistent effort has revived the entire region. Water returns to dried-up springs, the climate becomes milder, and abandoned villages become repopulated.
The story is a testament to how one determined, selfless individual can change the world for the better, creating life and hope where there was once only desolation.
