20 Long Answer Questions (Big)
1. Describe the family background of the King and Queen as mentioned in the text.
Solution: The King and Queen had several children, with Alicia being the eldest. Alicia was responsible and looked after her younger siblings. The King held a government job as his private profession. The Queen’s father was a medical professional who practiced out of town. This suggests a family that, despite their royal titles, lived a life somewhat similar to ordinary people with professional backgrounds.
2. How did the King encounter the fairy Grandmarina, and why was she invisible at first?
Solution: The King encountered the fairy after visiting a fishmonger’s shop to buy salmon. An errand-boy ran after him, mentioning an old lady the King hadn't noticed. The fairy was invisible to the King initially because she chose to be; she only revealed herself when she trotted up to him. This invisibility highlights her magical nature and suggests that she only appears to those she chooses to interact with.
3. What specific instructions did Grandmarina give regarding the fish-bone?
Solution: Grandmarina instructed the King to invite Princess Alicia to eat the salmon. Once she finished, a fish-bone would be left on her plate. Alicia was to dry the bone, rub it, and polish it until it shone. Most importantly, she was told to take care of it as a magic present that could only be used once to grant a wish, provided it was used at the "right time."
4. Why is the "right time" a crucial condition for using the magic fish-bone?
Solution: The "right time" is crucial because the magic was intended to be a last resort. As Alicia explained later, the right time comes only when people have done their very best and yet their efforts are not enough. This condition teaches the importance of hard work, perseverance, and self-reliance before seeking magical or external help.
5. Describe Alicia’s reaction to the King’s distress about being poor.
Solution: When the King came to Alicia’s room sighing and complaining about being "extremely poor," Alicia remained calm and practical. She first asked if there was any other way to get money. When the King confirmed he had tried all ways and failed, she realized the "right time" had arrived. She didn't panic but instead reached for the magic fish-bone she had carefully preserved.
6. How does the story portray Alicia as a responsible character?
Solution: Alicia is portrayed as responsible from the very beginning, as she is the one who looks after her younger siblings. She also shows responsibility by following the fairy’s instructions perfectly—drying and polishing the bone until it shone like mother-of-pearl. Furthermore, her patience in waiting for the absolute "right time" to use the magic shows her maturity and sense of duty.
7. What happened when Alicia finally used the magic fish-bone?
Solution: Alicia took the bone out of her pocket, gave it a kiss, and wished it was salary day. Immediately, the magic worked, and the King’s salary came rattling down the chimney. This was followed by the appearance of Grandmarina, who arrived to see Alicia and conclude the magic of the fish-bone.
8. Explain the significance of the ending involving the pug-dog.
Solution: After the wish was granted, Grandmarina decided to "make an end to the fish-bone." She took it from Alicia, and it was immediately snatched by the neighbor's pug-dog. This signifies that the magic was temporary and had served its purpose. It also adds a touch of humor and reality, showing that once the magic is gone, the object becomes ordinary again.
9. How is King Watkins different from the typical kings we see in fairy tales?
Solution: Unlike typical fairy tale kings who live in luxury and have endless gold, King Watkins is a working man. He has a "private profession" under the government and goes to an "office." He struggles with poverty and has to buy his own fish at a shop. This makes him a more relatable, human character who faces real-world financial problems.
10. What does the phrase "shone like mother-of-pearl" tell us about Alicia’s effort?
Solution: This phrase indicates that Alicia put a great deal of effort and care into preparing the fish-bone. She didn't just wipe it; she rubbed and polished it until it achieved a beautiful, iridescent glow. It reflects her dedication and her respect for the gift given by the fairy.
11. Why did Grandmarina wait until the salary arrived to appear at the house?
Solution: Grandmarina likely waited to see if Alicia would follow the condition of the "right time." By appearing only after the wish was made, she validated Alicia’s choice. Her appearance served to congratulate Alicia and to officially end the magic of the bone now that the crisis was resolved.
12. Discuss the theme of 'patience' in the story.
Solution: Patience is a central theme. Alicia keeps the fish-bone for many days ("Days went by") without rushing to use it. Even when the King is visibly upset and sighing, she waits until she is certain that all human efforts have been exhausted. Her ability to wait for the perfect moment is what ultimately makes the magic successful.
13. What can we infer about the King’s personality from his conversation with Alicia about money?
Solution: The King appears to be a hardworking but somewhat pessimistic or easily discouraged man. He sighs heavily and tells Alicia he has "tried all ways" and that there is "no way" left. He seems to rely on his daughter for emotional support, showing a vulnerable side not usually seen in royalty.
14. How does the errand-boy contribute to the plot?
Solution: The errand-boy acts as the bridge between the King and the magical world. Without his intervention, the King would have walked away without ever meeting Grandmarina. The boy’s observation of the "old lady" highlights that magic is often visible to the simple or the young, while the busy King missed it.
15. Describe the physical appearance and behavior of Grandmarina.
Solution: Grandmarina is described as an "old lady" who can make herself invisible. She wears high-quality "shot-silk." She is quite assertive, as she "trotted up" to the King and could read his thoughts. She is also kind, as she refers to Alicia as "my dear" and provides a solution to the family's problems.
16. What is the moral lesson of "The Magic Fish Bone"?
Solution: The moral lesson is that magic or outside help should only be sought after one has exhausted all their own efforts. Alicia’s philosophy—that the right time for help is when we have done our very best and it is not enough—teaches self-reliance and the value of hard work.
17. Why did Alicia kiss the fish-bone before making the wish?
Solution: Kissing the fish-bone was a gesture of affection, gratitude, and perhaps a way to activate the magic. It shows that Alicia valued the gift and treated it with love rather than just as a tool. It reflects her gentle and appreciative nature.
18. How does the setting of the story (office, fishmonger, chimney) affect the mood?
Solution: The setting blends the mundane (office, shops, chimneys) with the magical. This creates a "domestic fantasy" mood where magic feels like it could happen in everyday life. It makes the story feel more grounded and less like a distant, ancient legend.
19. Analyze the relationship between the King and Alicia.
Solution: The relationship is one of mutual trust and role-reversal. While the King is the provider, he is the one who comes to Alicia in despair. Alicia, though his daughter, acts as a source of wisdom and strength. The King trusts her enough to deliver the fairy’s message and later to listen to her explanation about the "right time."
20. What does the "snapping pug-dog" represent in the context of the story's end?
Solution: The pug-dog represents the return to normalcy. By having a common neighborhood pet "grab" the magic object, the author shows that the magical intervention is over. It suggests that life goes back to its usual routine once the specific problem (the lack of salary) is solved, and magic doesn't linger where it's no longer needed.

Lesson 4: Memory in Marble
1. Let’s Read (চলো পড়ি)
Tarun, a class five student, was given a task to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. Worried, he asked his grandfather for help. His grandfather told him the story of Prince Khurram, son of Jehangir. One day, Khurram saw an extremely beautiful girl, Arjumand Banu Begum, in the Meena Bazaar and wanted to marry her.
Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan and became emperor in 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was renamed Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “the brightest crown of the world.” When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her he would not marry again and would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.
Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years. He then started building the monument beside the river Yamuna. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build. The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. It is now considered one of the seven wonders of the World.

Last summer, I visited a salmon farm. It was a fascinating experience to see how these fish are raised. The farm had large circular tanks filled with clean, flowing water. I saw thousands of salmon swimming together. The guide explained how they are fed and how the water temperature is maintained. It was interesting to learn that salmon are born in freshwater but spend most of their lives in the sea. The visit taught me a lot about the life cycle of the fish that King Watkins bought in the story.
