CLASS 5 BUTTERFLY

It was a bright and sunny morning. A large group of young boys gathered in the woodland with their bows and arrows. They were the five Pandavas and the hundred Kauravas! The Pandava brothers and Kaurava brothers were cousins. But a fierce rivalry between them began to grow even when they were only children.

এটি একটি উজ্জ্বল এবং রৌদ্রোজ্জ্বল সকাল ছিল। একদল তরুণ বালক তাদের ধনুক এবং তীর নিয়ে জঙ্গলে জড়ো হয়েছিল। তারা ছিল পাঁচ পাণ্ডব এবং একশত কৌরব! পাণ্ডব ভাইয়েরা এবং কৌরব ভাইয়েরা খুড়তুতো ভাই ছিল। কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে একটি তীব্র প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতা ছোটবেলা থেকেই বাড়তে শুরু করেছিল।

The royal children learnt the skills of using weapons from Dronacharya. He was one of the greatest warriors of his time. The Pandavas and the Kauravas were quick to learn. Each of them had their own favourite weapons. Duryodhana and Bhima favoured the mace. Yudhisthira’s choice of weapon was the spear. Arjuna was fascinated by bows and arrows. The twins Nakula and Sahadeva were most comfortable with swords.

রাজকুমাররা দ্রোণাচার্যের কাছ থেকে অস্ত্র ব্যবহারের কৌশল শিখেছিল। তিনি তার সময়ের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ যোদ্ধা ছিলেন। পাণ্ডব এবং কৌরবরা দ্রুত শিখতে পারত। প্রত্যেকেরই তাদের নিজস্ব প্রিয় অস্ত্র ছিল। দুর্যোধন এবং ভীম গদা পছন্দ করত। যুধিষ্ঠিরের পছন্দের অস্ত্র ছিল বর্শা। অর্জুন ধনুক এবং তীরের প্রতি মুগ্ধ ছিল। যমজ ভাই নকুল এবং সহদেব তরবারির সাথে সবচেয়ে স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য বোধ করত।

The Guru treated all his disciples equally. But he liked Arjuna the most because Arjuna practised this art with great concentration. Soon he became the best archer among all. Duryodhana and his brother Dushasana did not like this at all. Silently, a feeling of dislike grew in their hearts towards the Pandavas. One day they openly criticized their Guru for showing favour towards Arjuna.

গুরু তার সমস্ত শিষ্যকে সমানভাবে দেখতেন। কিন্তু তিনি অর্জুনকে সবচেয়ে বেশি পছন্দ করতেন কারণ অর্জুন এই শিল্পটি অত্যন্ত মনোযোগের সাথে অনুশীলন করত। শীঘ্রই সে সবার মধ্যে সেরা তীরন্দাজ হয়ে উঠল। দুর্যোধন এবং তার ভাই দুঃশাসন এটা একেবারেই পছন্দ করত না। নীরবে, তাদের হৃদয়ে পাণ্ডবদের প্রতি একটি ঘৃণার অনুভূতি জন্মাতে লাগল। একদিন তারা অর্জুনের প্রতি পক্ষপাতিত্ব দেখানোর জন্য তাদের গুরুর প্রকাশ্যে সমালোচনা করল।

On that particular day, Guru Dronacharya asked the students to gather by the woodland. He had placed a wooden bird with a prominently painted eye on one of the trees. The teacher called all his disciples and said, “Look my children, a wooden bird is sitting on that far-off tree. You have to hit the arrow exactly in its eye. Are you ready?” Everyone nodded. First the eldest Yudhisthira was invited to try his skill.

সেই বিশেষ দিনে, গুরু দ্রোণাচার্য ছাত্রদের জঙ্গলের পাশে জড়ো হতে বললেন। তিনি একটি গাছে একটি কাঠের পাখি রেখেছিলেন যার চোখটি স্পষ্টভাবে আঁকা ছিল। শিক্ষক তার সমস্ত শিষ্যকে ডেকে বললেন, “দেখো আমার বাচ্চারা, ওই দূরের গাছে একটি কাঠের পাখি বসে আছে। তোমাদের ঠিক ওর চোখে তীর মারতে হবে। তোমরা কি প্রস্তুত?” সবাই মাথা নাড়ল। প্রথমে জ্যেষ্ঠ যুধিষ্ঠিরকে তার দক্ষতা চেষ্টা করার জন্য আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হল।

When Yudhisthira was ready, Dronacharya asked, “Yudhisthira, please tell me what you can see.” Yudhisthira replied innocently, “Gurudev, I can see you, the tree, people around me and the bird!” Dronacharya replied, “All right. Leave your bow and arrow and go.”

যখন যুধিষ্ঠির প্রস্তুত হলেন, দ্রোণাচার্য জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “যুধিষ্ঠির, দয়া করে আমাকে বলো তুমি কী দেখতে পাচ্ছ।” যুধিষ্ঠির সরলভাবে উত্তর দিলেন, “গুরুদেব, আমি আপনাকে, গাছ, আমার চারপাশের লোকজন এবং পাখিটিকে দেখতে পাচ্ছি!” দ্রোণাচার্য উত্তর দিলেন, “ঠিক আছে। তোমার ধনুক এবং তীর রেখে চলে যাও।”

Lastly, it was the turn of Arjuna. He was ready with his bow and arrow. The Guru asked him, “O Arjuna, will you tell me what is being observed by you?” “I can see only the eye of the bird,” replied Arjuna without breaking eye contact with his target. “Can’t you see the trees and the sky, or, perhaps the branch, where the bird is sitting?” his teacher asked. “No Gurudev, all I can see is the eye of the bird, and nothing else,” said Arjuna, holding his bow steadily. Now Dronacharya was very glad. He praised Arjuna for his immense concentration. With a smile on his face, Dronacharya said, “Shoot!” With a loud twang, the arrow sprang from the bow and struck the bird’s eye.

সবশেষে, অর্জুনের পালা এল। সে তার ধনুক এবং তীর নিয়ে প্রস্তুত ছিল। গুরু তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “হে অর্জুন, তুমি কি আমাকে বলবে তুমি কী পর্যবেক্ষণ করছ?” “আমি কেবল পাখির চোখ দেখতে পাচ্ছি,” অর্জুন তার লক্ষ্যের সাথে চোখের যোগাযোগ না ভেঙে উত্তর দিল। “তুমি কি গাছ এবং আকাশ, বা হয়তো ডালটি, যেখানে পাখিটি বসে আছে, দেখতে পাচ্ছ না?” তার শিক্ষক জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন। “না গুরুদেব, আমি কেবল পাখির চোখ দেখতে পাচ্ছি, আর কিছুই না,” অর্জুন তার ধনুক স্থিরভাবে ধরে বলল। এখন দ্রোণাচার্য খুব খুশি হলেন। তিনি অর্জুনের অসামান্য মনোযোগের জন্য তার প্রশংসা করলেন। মুখে হাসি নিয়ে দ্রোণাচার্য বললেন, “ছোঁড়ো!” একটি জোরে টংকার দিয়ে, তীরটি ধনুক থেকে বেরিয়ে পাখির চোখে আঘাত করল।
