Long Answer Questions (Big)

1. Describe the journey of Mita and her classmates to Bandel.

Solution: Mita and her classmates, a team of twenty-five, went to Bandel last Saturday. They were accompanied by their history teacher. Their journey started from Chandannagar by bus. Since it was their first outing, everyone was very excited. On the way, they had a discussion about the church, and Mita shared her enthusiasm as she had visited the place before.

2. Why did the teacher want the church to remain a "surprise" for the students?

Solution: When Mita expressed her excitement about having visited the church before, the teacher suggested that Mita should not tell everything right then. The teacher believed that if Mita described all the details immediately, the students would become familiar with everything beforehand. To keep the curiosity alive and let the students experience the church's beauty firsthand, the teacher wanted it to remain a surprise.

3. According to the teacher, why do we visit historical places?

Solution: The teacher explained that there are two main reasons for visiting places. Sometimes, people visit a place simply for fun and enjoyment. However, at other times, such visits are educational. They help us gather valuable information about the history and culture of a specific place, making the learning process more practical and interesting.

4. Explain the historical background of the Portuguese settlement in Bandel as mentioned in the text.

Solution: The Portuguese settlement in Bengal has a long history. Around 1571, the Portuguese began using Bandel as a port. Later, the Mughal Emperor Akbar granted them permission to establish a town in Hooghly. Following this, in 1599, the Portuguese built a church at Bandel, which stands as a memorial of their presence in the region.

5. What happened to the Bandel Church during the Mughal siege of Hooghly?

Solution: During the Mughal siege of Hooghly, the original Bandel Church was destroyed. The conflict led to the capture of the priest, Father Joan da Cruz, and several thousand Christians. They were taken as prisoners to the Agra Fort to face the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for punishment.

6. Describe the "peculiar incident" that took place at the Agra Fort.

Solution: At the Agra Fort, the prisoners were ordered to be punished by being placed before ferocious elephants. However, a surprising event occurred: one elephant, instead of attacking, carried Father Joan da Cruz right up to Emperor Shah Jahan. The elephant then knelt before the Emperor as if it were asking for mercy for the priest.

7. How did Emperor Shah Jahan react to the elephant's behavior?

Solution: Emperor Shah Jahan was deeply impressed by the strange and peculiar incident where the elephant showed respect and asked for mercy for Father Joan da Cruz. Because of this, he decided to set all the prisoners free and sent them back to Bandel. He also granted money to reconstruct the church in 1633.

8. What role did Mita play in the group discussion during the bus ride?

Solution: Mita was the only student in the group who had already visited the Bandel Church. While others remained silent when the teacher asked about the place, Mita spoke up with great enthusiasm. She also shared information she had learned from her uncle, specifically that the church serves as a memorial of the Portuguese settlement in Bengal.

9. Summarize the timeline of the Bandel Church from 1571 to 1633.

Solution: In 1571, the Portuguese started using Bandel as a port. In 1599, they built the church after getting permission from Akbar to build a town. Later, the church was destroyed during a Mughal siege. Finally, in 1633, after the miraculous elephant incident in Agra, Emperor Shah Jahan provided funds to reconstruct the church.

10. Why is the Bandel Church considered a "Building to Remember"?

Solution: It is considered a building to remember because it represents the history of Portuguese settlement in Bengal and the cultural interactions between the Portuguese and the Mughal Emperors. The story of its destruction, the miracle of the elephant, and its reconstruction by Shah Jahan make it a significant historical monument.

11. How does the text describe the teacher's method of teaching?

Solution: The teacher uses an interactive and patient method. She asks students questions to gauge their knowledge, encourages them to visit places to learn about history and culture, and explains complex historical events (like the Portuguese settlement and the Mughal siege) clearly and patiently when students ask questions.

12. What was the significance of the Mughal Emperor Akbar in this story?

Solution: Emperor Akbar played a crucial role in the early history of the Portuguese in Bengal. He was the one who gave the Portuguese permission to build a town in Hooghly. This permission eventually led to the construction of the Bandel Church in 1599, marking the beginning of their religious and cultural footprint in the area.

13. Describe the atmosphere on the bus as the students traveled to Bandel.

Solution: The atmosphere was filled with excitement and curiosity. Since it was their first outing, the students were eager. Most were quiet and attentive as they listened to the teacher, while Mita was full of enthusiasm. There was a sense of wonder as they discussed why they were visiting a historical site instead of just going for fun.

14. What does the story tell us about the relationship between the Portuguese and the Mughals?

Solution: The relationship was complex. Initially, Akbar was supportive, granting permission for a town. Later, during Shah Jahan's reign, there was conflict leading to a siege and the destruction of the church. However, the relationship ended on a note of mercy and reconstruction after the Emperor was impressed by the priest's character and the elephant's behavior.

15. How did Mita's uncle contribute to her knowledge of the church?

Solution: Mita's uncle had told her that the Bandel Church is not just a religious building but a memorial of the Portuguese settlement in Bengal. This information helped Mita understand the historical importance of the place beyond its physical appearance, which she shared with her teacher and classmates.

16. What can we learn from the elephant's behavior in the story?

Solution: The elephant's behavior is portrayed as a miraculous or highly unusual event. By carrying the priest to the Emperor and kneeling, it symbolized a plea for mercy. This suggests that even ferocious animals can sense goodness or that divine intervention saved the priest, ultimately changing the Emperor's heart from anger to kindness.

17. Why did Sunita ask the teacher about the choice of Bandel Church?

Solution: Sunita was curious about the purpose of their trip. She wanted to know why they had specifically chosen Bandel Church for their outing. This question allowed the teacher to explain that travel is not just for fun but also for gathering valuable information about history and culture.

18. Discuss the importance of the year 1599 in the context of the story.

Solution: The year 1599 is significant because it marks the completion of the Bandel Church by the Portuguese. After receiving permission from Emperor Akbar to settle in Hooghly, this was the year they established their primary place of worship, which would later become a major historical landmark in Bengal.

19. How did the teacher explain the concept of a "memorial"?

Solution: While the text doesn't give a dictionary definition, the teacher explains it through the example of the Bandel Church. She clarifies that the church serves as a reminder (memorial) of the Portuguese settlement. By explaining the history from 1571 to 1633, she shows how the building stands to help us remember past events and people.

20. What was the final outcome for the Christian prisoners in Agra?

Solution: The final outcome was positive and unexpected. Instead of being punished by the elephants, they were set free by Emperor Shah Jahan. They were allowed to return to Bandel, and the Emperor even provided the financial means to rebuild their destroyed church, which was completed in 1633.

CLASS 5 BUTTERFLY

Lesson 4: Memory in Marble

1. Let’s Read (চলো পড়ি)

Tarun, a class five student, was given a task to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. Worried, he asked his grandfather for help. His grandfather told him the story of Prince Khurram, son of Jehangir. One day, Khurram saw an extremely beautiful girl, Arjumand Banu Begum, in the Meena Bazaar and wanted to marry her.

Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan and became emperor in 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was renamed Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “the brightest crown of the world.” When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her he would not marry again and would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.

Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years. He then started building the monument beside the river Yamuna. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build. The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. It is now considered one of the seven wonders of the World.

2. What We Learn (আমরা যা শিখি)

The Power of a Promise

Shah Jahan built the magnificent Taj Mahal to keep a promise he made to his dying wife. This teaches us the importance of keeping our promises and honoring our commitments.

Love and Memory

The Taj Mahal is a symbol of Shah Jahan’s deep love for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It shows how art and architecture can be used to create a timeless memorial to remember a loved one forever.

Hard Work and Dedication

Building the Taj Mahal took 22 years and 22,000 workers. This incredible feat of construction teaches us that great things can be achieved through long-term dedication, patience, and the hard work of many people.

Paragraph-wise Translation (English | Bengali)

Mita and her classmates, a team of twenty five, went to Bandel last Saturday with their history teacher. They visited the Bandel Church. It was their first outing. So, everybody was excited. Their bus started from Chandannagar. On their way, the teacher asked them whether anyone had visited the Bandel Church before. Most of them had not, so they remained silent. Mita was an exception, though. She said with enthusiasm, “Yes, Madam. I have visited the place before”.
“If Mita tells us right now about everything she had seen, we will get familiar with all its details. Let the church remain a surprise to us.” Sunita, one of the students, asked the teacher, “Why have we chosen Bandel Church then, Madam?” The teacher smiled. “Sometimes we visit a place for fun and enjoyment. At times, our visit helps us to gather valuable information about the history and culture of a place.”
Mita said, “Madam, my uncle told me that it can be seen as a memorial of the Portuguese settlement in Bengal”. The teacher patiently explained to the girls, “Ok, let me make it clear. Around 1571, the Portuguese began to use Bandel as a port. The Mughal Emperor Akbar gave them permission to build a town in Hooghly. In 1599, the Portuguese built a church at Bandel.”
Eventually they reached their destination. The teacher said, “This church was destroyed during the Mughal siege of Hooghly.” “What happened then?” asked Sunita. The priest, Father Joan da Cruz, along with a few thousand Christians, was taken to Agra fort before the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. His order was to punish the prisoners. So they were made to stand before ferocious elephants. But, surprisingly, one elephant carried Father Joan da Cruz right up to the emperor and knelt before him, as if asking for mercy. This peculiar incident impressed Shah Jahan. He set the prisoners free and sent them back to Bandel. Shah Jahan granted money to reconstruct the Church in the year 1633.

Common Conceptual Mistakes & Pitfalls

Common MistakeCorrect Concept
Confusing the roles of Akbar and Shah Jahan.Akbar gave permission to build the town (1571). Shah Jahan granted money to reconstruct the church (1633) after it was destroyed.
Thinking the church was built in 1633.The church was originally built in 1599. 1633 was the year of reconstruction.
Believing Mita was visiting for the first time.Mita was the exception; she had visited the place before. It was the first outing for the rest of the team.
Using Present Tense for historical events.Historical facts must use Past Tense (e.g., "The Portuguese built the church," not "build").
