Barun’s mother gave him an exciting book called ‘India’s Space Travels’. He was very curious to learn about the brave people who travelled beyond the sky. He started reading about Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to go to space. In 1984, Rakesh Sharma flew aboard the Soyuz T-11 spacecraft. During his time in space, he spoke with the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The whole country was proud.

Next, Barun read about Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She was born in Karnal, Haryana and was called ‘Montu’ by her family. In 1982, she went to the USA to chase her dream. She became a research scientist at NASA. Her first space mission was in 1997. Her second mission was on the space shuttle Columbia. Tragically, on 1st February 2003, the shuttle was lost during re-entry, and Kalpana, along with the crew, passed away. Today, her legacy lives on, with a hill on Mars and a star in deep space named after her. Her story shows the value of hard work and sincerity.

Kalpana Chawla’s story shows the value of hard work and sincerity. Through her dedication, she became a research scientist at NASA and an astronaut. This inspires us to be sincere and dedicated in our own studies and work.

Even though Kalpana Chawla is no longer with us, her legacy lives on. A hill on Mars and a star are named after her. This teaches us that great achievements can inspire people forever.
