1. Let’s Read
Mother: Bikash has been gone for six months. I miss my son very much.
Ruma: I miss him too. But he had to go. You know he had to attend that language-learning course.
Mother: We are Bengalees, after all. I don’t understand why we need to learn English.
Ruma: Bikash will be able to explain that.
মা: বিকাশ ছয় মাস ধরে চলে গেছে। আমি আমার ছেলেকে খুব মিস করি।
রুমা: আমিও তাকে মিস করি। কিন্তু তাকে যেতেই হত। তুমি তো জানো তাকে সেই ভাষা শেখার কোর্সে যোগ দিতে হয়েছিল।
মা: আমরা তো বাঙালি। আমি বুঝি না আমাদের ইংরেজি শেখার দরকার কেন।
রুমা: বিকাশ সেটা বোঝাতে পারবে।
[Just then, Bikash steps in, smiling. He carries several brown paper parcels.]
Mother: Oh! Bikash! How wonderful! We were talking about you just now.
Bikash: Yes mother, it’s me. I have some great news for you. I’m a postal service employee now. I passed an examination and joined this service.
Ruma: That’s really great! But how did all this happen?
[ঠিক তখনই, বিকাশ হাসিমুখে প্রবেশ করে। তার হাতে কয়েকটি বাদামী কাগজের পার্সেল।]
মা: ওহ! বিকাশ! কী আশ্চর্য! আমরা এইমাত্র তোমার কথাই বলছিলাম।
বিকাশ: হ্যাঁ মা, এটা আমি। আমার কাছে তোমাদের জন্য একটা দারুণ খবর আছে। আমি এখন একজন ডাক বিভাগের কর্মচারী। আমি একটি পরীক্ষায় পাস করে এই চাকরিতে যোগ দিয়েছি।
রুমা: এটা সত্যিই দারুণ! কিন্তু এসব কী করে হল?
Bikash: A lot of office work in Bengal is done in English. I was greatly benefitted by the English class I attended. I have understood that it is important to know English and Bengali equally well.
Mother: Is this a permanent job?
Bikash: Yes, absolutely! See, I have brought sarees and sweets for you and Ruma.
বিকাশ: বাংলায় অনেক অফিসের কাজ ইংরেজিতে হয়। আমি যে ইংরেজি ক্লাসে যোগ দিয়েছিলাম তা থেকে আমি অনেক উপকৃত হয়েছি। আমি বুঝতে পেরেছি যে ইংরেজি এবং বাংলা সমানভাবে ভালোভাবে জানাটা জরুরি।
মা: এটা কি স্থায়ী চাকরি?
বিকাশ: হ্যাঁ, একদম! দেখো, আমি তোমার আর রুমার জন্য শাড়ি আর মিষ্টি নিয়ে এসেছি।
[The two languages come close to each other.]
English Language: Sister!
Bengali Language: Yes?
English Language: You look worried. Will you tell me why?
Bengali Language: I was the queen of Bengal’s speech. This is my land, my people. But now everyone is keen to learn English.
[দুটি ভাষা একে অপরের কাছে আসে।]
ইংরেজি ভাষা: বোন!
বাংলা ভাষা: হ্যাঁ?
ইংরেজি ভাষা: তোমাকে চিন্তিত দেখাচ্ছে। আমাকে বলবে কেন?
বাংলা ভাষা: আমি ছিলাম বাংলার কথার রানী। এটা আমার দেশ, আমার মানুষ। কিন্তু এখন সবাই ইংরেজি শিখতে আগ্রহী।
English Language: You see, India is a big country. People speak different languages here. But many of them know English. I help them to understand each other. I link the different regions together. So I am needed for my usefulness. But you live in the hearts of your people. Look at this family!
Bengali language: Shall we stay like sisters then?
English Language: Yes! Come, let’s hold hands!
ইংরেজি ভাষা: তুমি দেখো, ভারত একটি বড় দেশ। এখানে মানুষ বিভিন্ন ভাষায় কথা বলে। কিন্তু তাদের মধ্যে অনেকেই ইংরেজি জানে। আমি তাদের একে অপরকে বুঝতে সাহায্য করি। আমি বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলকে একসাথে যুক্ত করি। তাই আমার উপযোগিতার জন্য আমার প্রয়োজন। কিন্তু তুমি তোমার মানুষের হৃদয়ে বাস করো। এই পরিবারটির দিকে তাকাও!
বাংলা ভাষা: তাহলে কি আমরা বোনের মতো থাকব?
ইংরেজি ভাষা: হ্যাঁ! এসো, আমরা হাত ধরি!

2. What We Learn
Importance of Both Mother Tongue and English
The play teaches us that while our mother tongue, Bengali, lives in our hearts and is part of our identity, English is also very useful for communication across India and for getting good jobs.
নাটকটি আমাদের শেখায় যে যদিও আমাদের মাতৃভাষা, বাংলা, আমাদের হৃদয়ে বাস করে এবং আমাদের পরিচয়ের অংশ, ইংরেজিও ভারত জুড়ে যোগাযোগের জন্য এবং ভালো চাকরি পাওয়ার জন্য খুব দরকারি।
Hard Work Leads to Success
Bikash attended a language course and worked hard to pass an examination. His efforts resulted in him getting a permanent job, which brought happiness to his family. This shows that hard work pays off.
বিকাশ একটি ভাষা কোর্সে যোগ দিয়েছিল এবং একটি পরীক্ষায় পাস করার জন্য কঠোর পরিশ্রম করেছিল। তার প্রচেষ্টার ফলে সে একটি স্থায়ী চাকরি পায়, যা তার পরিবারে আনন্দ নিয়ে আসে। এটি দেখায় যে কঠোর পরিশ্রমের ফল পাওয়া যায়।
Languages Can Coexist Like Sisters
The play shows that English and Bengali are not enemies. They can exist together like sisters, each with its own important role. One connects people across regions, while the other connects to our culture and heart.
