She was particularly astonished to hear about trains that run underground. This concept was completely new and magical to her, making her very eager to see them for herself.

2. Describe the events of Friday evening that led to Jhinuk's dream.

On Friday evening, Jhinuk was expecting her father to arrive for the weekend. However, her mother informed her that he was busy with urgent work and might not come. Jhinuk felt very sad and missed him deeply. She ate her dinner silently and went to sleep with a heavy heart, which eventually led to her strange and magical dream.

3. How did the fairy help Jhinuk in her dream?

The fairy visited Jhinuk in her dream and understood her desire to meet her father. She used her glittering magic wand to transport Jhinuk instantly to Kolkata. She acted as a guide, showing Jhinuk the busy streets, the port, Eden Gardens, the Metro Rail, and finally taking her to College Street where her father was.

4. What did Jhinuk experience when she first arrived on a busy Kolkata road in her dream?

In a moment, the fairy's magic placed Jhinuk on a busy road. She was surrounded by tall buildings, heavy moving traffic, and people hurrying about. The environment was very different from Alipurduar. The loud blaring of horns was so intense that it startled her.

5. Describe Jhinuk's visit to the Kolkata port as shown by the fairy.

After the busy road, the fairy waved her wand again to show Jhinuk a river. At the river, Jhinuk saw large ships anchored. The fairy explained that this was the Kolkata port. It was a peaceful yet impressive sight compared to the noisy streets she had just seen.

6. What was significant about Jhinuk's visit to Eden Gardens?

When the fairy took Jhinuk to Eden Gardens, she saw a vast green field. Jhinuk immediately remembered that the famous cricketer Sourav Ganguly had played there. It shows that Jhinuk was aware of the city's landmarks and famous personalities through the stories her father told her.

As Jhinuk ran towards her father in the dream, she heard a familiar voice telling her to wake up. When she opened her eyes, it was morning, and her father was actually standing before her, smiling. It turned out he had managed to finish his work and come home after all.

10. Compare the environment of Alipurduar and Kolkata as described in the text.

Alipurduar is described as a "pretty city" that is quiet and surrounded by "distant hills." In contrast, Kolkata is depicted as a "busy" place with "tall buildings," "moving traffic," "hurrying people," and "loud blaring of horns." While Alipurduar is peaceful, Kolkata is full of energy and modern infrastructure like the Metro Rail.

11. Why is the story titled 'A Dream Journey'?

The story is titled 'A Dream Journey' because the majority of the adventure takes place within Jhinuk's dream. Since she couldn't go to Kolkata in reality that weekend, her imagination, personified by a fairy, took her on a magical tour of the city's famous spots while she was asleep.

12. What does the text tell us about College Street?

According to the text, College Street is a famous road in Kolkata. It is unique because it is lined with bookshops on both sides of the street. It is a place where people go to find various kinds of books, and in the story, it is where Jhinuk's father was spotted.

13. How do we know Jhinuk loves her father very much?

We know Jhinuk loves her father because she eagerly waits for his weekend visits. When she hears he might not come, she becomes very sad and loses her appetite, eating dinner silently. Even in her magical dream with a fairy, her ultimate wish was not just to see sights, but to meet her father.

14. What are 'moving stairs' and where did Jhinuk see them?

Moving stairs are escalators. Jhinuk encountered them at the Esplanade Metro station in her dream. They are used to carry passengers from the ground level to the underground platforms where the Metro trains run.

15. Describe the character of the fairy in the story.

The fairy is a kind and magical character. She is described as "beautiful" and "smiling warmly." She is helpful because she uses her magic wand to fulfill Jhinuk's wish to see Kolkata and meet her father, acting as a gentle guide throughout the dream journey.

16. What would you do if a fairy granted you three wishes, based on the chapter's writing practice?

Based on the writing practice in the text, one might wish for a grand library filled with every book ever written, the ability to talk to animals, and a magical treehouse that could travel to any place in the world. These wishes reflect a love for learning, nature, and adventure.

17. Why would someone like to visit College Street? Someone would like to visit College Street because it is a paradise for book lovers. As mentioned in the writing practice, seeing so many bookshops together in one place is a wonderful experience. It allows people to explore both old and new books that might not be available elsewhere.

18. Explain the phrase "startled her" in the context of the story.

The phrase "startled her" means to suddenly shock or alarm someone. In the story, Jhinuk was used to the quiet hills of Alipurduar. When she was suddenly transported to a busy Kolkata street, the "loud blaring of horns" was so sudden and noisy that it frightened or surprised her momentarily.

19. What is the significance of Sourav Ganguly in the story?

Sourav Ganguly is mentioned to highlight the importance of Eden Gardens. By mentioning him, the story connects a real-life legendary figure to the fictional dream, making the description of the "vast green field" more relatable and significant for a child like Jhinuk.

20. Was the dream journey entirely different from reality? Explain.

The journey was a mix of fantasy and reality. While the fairy and the instant travel were fantasy, the locations (Eden Gardens, Metro Rail, College Street) and the final outcome (her father arriving home) were real. The dream acted as a bridge between Jhinuk's longing and the happy reality of her father's arrival.

Lesson 4: Memory in Marble

1. Let’s Read (চলো পড়ি)

Tarun, a class five student, was given a task to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. Worried, he asked his grandfather for help. His grandfather told him the story of Prince Khurram, son of Jehangir. One day, Khurram saw an extremely beautiful girl, Arjumand Banu Begum, in the Meena Bazaar and wanted to marry her.

Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan and became emperor in 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was renamed Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “the brightest crown of the world.” When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her he would not marry again and would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.

Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years. He then started building the monument beside the river Yamuna. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build. The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. It is now considered one of the seven wonders of the World.

2. What We Learn (আমরা যা শিখি)

The Power of a Promise

Shah Jahan built the magnificent Taj Mahal to keep a promise he made to his dying wife. This teaches us the importance of keeping our promises and honoring our commitments.

Love and Memory

The Taj Mahal is a symbol of Shah Jahan’s deep love for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It shows how art and architecture can be used to create a timeless memorial to remember a loved one forever.

Hard Work and Dedication

Building the Taj Mahal took 22 years and 22,000 workers. This incredible feat of construction teaches us that great things can be achieved through long-term dedication, patience, and the hard work of many people.

Para-by-Para Translation (English | Bengali)
Jhinuk lives with her mother in Alipurduar. It is a pretty city surrounded by distant hills. Jhinuk’s father works in Kolkata. On some weekends, he comes to his home. During these visits, he tells her stories about Kolkata. Some of the stories amaze Jhinuk. Her father has told her of the Metro Rail in Kolkata. Jhinuk has been astonished to hear of trains that run underground.
One weekend, Jhinuk was expecting her father to arrive. But on Friday evening, her mother told her, “Your father may not come tomorrow. He is busy with some urgent work.” Jhinuk felt very sad. She was missing her father very much. She had her dinner silently and went to sleep. Then she had a strange dream!
A beautiful fairy visited her in her dream. “I know you want to meet your father,” the fairy said. Jhinuk asked eagerly, “Will you take me to Kolkata, then?” The fairy smiled. She waved her glittering magic wand. And it was magic! In a moment Jhinuk found herself in a busy road. Around her she saw tall buildings, moving traffic and hurrying people. The loud blaring of horns startled her.
The fairy waved her magic wand again. At once, Jhinuk saw a river in front of her. Large ships were anchored in the river. “This is the Kolkata port”, the fairy said. The beautiful fairy smiled warmly. “Let me take you to the Eden Gardens now”. Jhinuk saw before her a vast green field. Sourav Ganguly had played here, she remembered.
“Can you show me the underground trains?” Jhinuk asked. “Why not? Let us go right now”, the fairy answered. They entered the Esplanade Metro station. The moving stairs took them underground. The train came into the station and they got up. Jhinuk was thrilled. “Where will you take me next?” she asked breathlessly. Jhinuk said, “I want to meet my father.” The fairy waved her magic wand again. Jhinuk saw a road lined with bookshops on either side. “This is College Street”, the fairy said. Jhinuk suddenly spotted her father in a bookshop. She was delighted. She ran towards him.
“Wake up Jhinuk, wake up”, said a familiar voice. Jhinuk wakes up from her dream. It is morning. Her father stands before her, smiling. So he could manage to come home, after all.

Explaining "A Dream Journey" to a 5-year-old:

"Once there was a little girl named Jhinuk who missed her daddy very much because he worked far away in Kolkata. One night, while she was sleeping, a beautiful fairy with a sparkly magic wand came into her dream! The fairy took Jhinuk on a magical trip to the big city. They saw giant ships in the water, a huge green field where people play cricket, and they even rode a special train that travels deep under the ground! Jhinuk was so happy to see all these things and even found her daddy in a bookshop. When she woke up the next morning, her daddy was actually there in her room, smiling at her. It was the best surprise ever!"
