Lesson 2: A Girl in a Fair

Lipi is a little girl. She is nine now. She lives with her parents at Sukhnagar. Every year a big fair is held in the village. It is going on right now. Lipi’s father makes masks of various kinds. He sells them in the fair.
লিপি একটি ছোট্ট মেয়ে। তার বয়স এখন নয়। সে তার বাবা-মায়ের সাথে সুখনগরে বাস করে। প্রতি বছর গ্রামে একটি বড় মেলা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এটি এখনই চলছে। লিপির বাবা বিভিন্ন ধরণের মুখোশ তৈরি করেন। তিনি সেগুলো মেলায় বিক্রি করেন।
“Can you take me to the fair today?” Lipi asks her father. “You know I have to sell masks all day. So I will be very busy,” her father replies. But Lipi repeatedly asks him to take her along. At last her father agrees.
“তুমি কি আজ আমাকে মেলায় নিয়ে যেতে পারবে?” লিপি তার বাবাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করে। “তুমি তো জানো আমাকে সারাদিন মুখোশ বিক্রি করতে হবে। তাই আমি খুব ব্যস্ত থাকব,” তার বাবা উত্তর দেন। কিন্তু লিপি বারবার তাকে সাথে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য অনুরোধ করে। অবশেষে তার বাবা রাজি হন।
Little Lipi has never been to a fair. So she is very excited today. “I have never seen so many people together!” she exclaims in wonder. A small crowd has gathered in front of her father’s shop. Some of them are buying masks. She is delighted to see that the masks are selling well. Her father is also happy.
ছোট্ট লিপি কখনও মেলায় যায়নি। তাই সে আজ খুব উত্তেজিত। “আমি কখনও এত লোক একসাথে দেখিনি!” সে বিস্ময়ে বলে ওঠে। তার বাবার দোকানের সামনে একটি ছোট ভিড় জমেছে। তাদের মধ্যে কেউ কেউ মুখোশ কিনছে। মুখোশগুলো ভালো বিক্রি হচ্ছে দেখে সে খুব আনন্দিত। তার বাবাও খুশি।
Looking inside the shop, Lipi notices a girl her age. “Who is the girl, father?” she asks. “She is Mansur’s daughter,” replies her father, “You may go and talk to her. But do not go anywhere else.” “Ok, father,” says Lipi and goes to the girl. “What is your name?” Lipi asks. “Rubina,” she answers.” I am Lipi. Are you in the same class as me?” Lipi asks her. Soon, they are friends.
দোকানের ভিতরে তাকাতেই লিপি তার বয়সী একটি মেয়েকে দেখতে পায়। “মেয়েটি কে, বাবা?” সে জিজ্ঞাসা করে। “সে মনসুরের মেয়ে,” তার বাবা উত্তর দেন, “তুমি গিয়ে তার সাথে কথা বলতে পারো। কিন্তু অন্য কোথাও যেও না।” “ঠিক আছে, বাবা,” লিপি বলে মেয়েটির কাছে যায়। “তোমার নাম কী?” লিপি জিজ্ঞাসা করে। “রুবিনা,” সে উত্তর দেয়। “আমি লিপি। তুমি কি আমার ক্লাসেই পড়ো?” লিপি তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করে। শীঘ্রই, তারা বন্ধু হয়ে যায়।
Lipi looks around the fair. She sees the huge merry-go-round. People riding it are shouting in joy. Close by, a puppet show is about to start. Lipi looks at food stalls a little further from their shop. “Father, I want to have alu kabli and jilabis,” she says. She also hears a group of bauls sing some distance away. She knows that bauls are the folk singers of Bengal.
লিপি মেলার চারপাশে তাকায়। সে বিশাল নাগরদোলাটি দেখতে পায়। তাতে চড়া লোকেরা আনন্দে চিৎকার করছে। কাছেই, একটি পুতুল নাচ শুরু হতে চলেছে। লিপি তাদের দোকান থেকে কিছুটা দূরে খাবারের দোকানগুলোর দিকে তাকায়। “বাবা, আমি আলু কাবলি আর জিলাপি খেতে চাই,” সে বলে। সে কিছুটা দূরে একদল বাউলের গানও শুনতে পায়। সে জানে যে বাউলরা বাংলার লোক গায়ক।
Lipi’s father buys her a doll and a huge gas balloon. She has fun riding the merry-go-round. Her father even allows her to buy some colourful glass bangles. Lipi enjoys having alu-kabli and phuchka. She takes some jilabis home. Her father buys a nice saree for her mother. Lipi is very happy. She wishes to visit the fair again next year.
লিপির বাবা তাকে একটি পুতুল এবং একটি বিশাল গ্যাস বেলুন কিনে দেন। সে নাগরদোলায় চড়ে মজা পায়। তার বাবা তাকে কিছু রঙিন কাঁচের চুড়ি কেনারও অনুমতি দেন। লিপি আলু-কাবলি এবং ফুচকা খেয়ে উপভোগ করে। সে কিছু জিলাপি বাড়িতে নিয়ে যায়। তার বাবা তার মায়ের জন্য একটি সুন্দর শাড়ি কেনেন। লিপি খুব খুশি। সে আগামী বছর আবার মেলায় আসার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করে।

2. What We Learn
The Joy of New Experiences
Lipi has never been to a fair before, so she is very excited. The story teaches us that trying new things and visiting new places can bring us a lot of happiness and wonder.
লিপি আগে কখনও মেলায় যায়নি, তাই সে খুব উত্তেজিত। গল্পটি আমাদের শেখায় যে নতুন কিছু চেষ্টা করা এবং নতুন জায়গায় যাওয়া আমাদের অনেক আনন্দ এবং বিস্ময় এনে দিতে পারে।
Making New Friends
Even though she is in a new place, Lipi is friendly and makes a new friend, Rubina. This shows us that being open and talking to people can lead to new friendships.
যদিও সে একটি নতুন জায়গায়, লিপি বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ এবং একটি নতুন বন্ধু, রুবিনা তৈরি করে। এটি আমাদের দেখায় যে খোলা মনের এবং মানুষের সাথে কথা বললে নতুন বন্ধুত্ব হতে পারে।
Appreciating Local Culture
The fair is full of local culture, from the masks and clay dolls to the Baul singers. Lipi enjoys all of it. This teaches us to appreciate the traditions and arts of our own community.
