Penguins are among the most recognizable and beloved birds in the world. Unlike most birds, penguins cannot fly in the air. Instead, their wings have evolved into flippers, making them expert swimmers. They spend about half of their lives in the oceans and the other half on land or ice. To survive in the freezing temperatures of Antarctica, they have a thick layer of blubber (fat) under their skin and tightly packed, waterproof feathers that keep the cold water away from their bodies. When the harsh winter winds blow, Emperor penguins huddle together in large groups to share body heat, taking turns standing in the cold outer edges of the circle.

I was having tea at home on the evening of 30th January, 1948, when I was called to Birla house by an urgent telephone. Gandhiji had been shot on his way to a prayer meeting. I was numb with shock as I got into the car.

At the Birla House, Gandhiji's relatives and followers had gathered round his body. There was silence in the room as Gandhiji breathed his last. Words of Bapuji's death had spread through Delhi like a flame fanned by wind. Sad groups of men and women had collected around Birla House. Out of every window one could see a brown blur of faces. They did not make a sound. There was an unnatural silence. It was as if time stood still for those few minutes.

The people were too stunned to speak in the beginning. Later they clamoured wildly, shouting and crying. They jostled one another in a stampede to break into the house. They calmed a little when it was announced that they would be allowed to see Gandhiji before the funeral.

When one is faced with the shock of a loved one's death, one whimpers: "What will become of me now that he has left me?" This was surely the question uppermost in the mind of the mourning people. Write a paragraph in about 100 words on the topic: "The Importance of Non-violence and Peace in Today's World".

Title:
Suggested Answer: The Importance of Non-violence and Peace in Today's World
In today's fast-paced and increasingly conflicted world, the principles of non-violence (Ahimsa) and peace, as taught by Mahatma Gandhi, are more relevant than ever. Wars, terrorism, and hatred only lead to the destruction of lives and resources, leaving behind a trail of sorrow and grief. Non-violence, on the other hand, is a powerful weapon that resolves conflicts through dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect. It teaches us to conquer hatred with love and anger with patience. By practicing peace and tolerance in our daily lives, we can build a harmonious, secure, and progressive society where humanity can truly flourish.

8. Paragraph Writing [7]

Write a paragraph in about 100 words on the topic: "The Importance of Trees in Our Lives", keeping in mind the message of the poem 'My Own True Family'.

Title:
Suggested Answer: The Importance of Trees in Our Lives
Trees are our true family and our most reliable friends on Earth. They are the primary source of the oxygen we breathe and play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance. They provide us with food, timber, medicine, and shade. By absorbing harmful carbon dioxide, they help combat global warming and climate change. Furthermore, trees prevent soil erosion and bring rain. Unfortunately, humans are recklessly chopping down trees for selfish needs. As the poem 'My Own True Family' suggests, we must stop this cruelty. We should pledge to plant more trees and protect them, because if trees die, human survival will become impossible.

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions:

Penguins are among the most recognizable and beloved birds in the world. Unlike most birds, penguins cannot fly in the air. Instead, their wings have evolved into flippers, making them expert swimmers. They spend about half of their lives in the oceans and the other half on land or ice. Emperor penguins, the largest of all penguin species, can dive up to 1,500 feet deep and hold their breath for over 20 minutes while hunting for fish, squid, and krill.

Of course, there was nobody for us to play with on the Big Half Moon. We just had to make the most of each other, and we did. We live on the Big Half Moon island. 'We' are Father and Claude and I and Aunt Esther and Mimi and Dick. It used to be only Father and Claude and I. It is all on account of the kite that there are more of us. This is what I want to tell you about.

Father is the keeper of the Big Half Moon lighthouse. I am eleven years old. Claude is twelve. In winter, when the harbour is frozen over, we all move over to the mainland. As soon as spring comes, back we sail to our own dear island.

The funny part used to be that people always pitied us when the time came for us to return. They said we must be so lonesome over there, with no other children near us. Of course Claude and I would have liked to have someone to play with us. It is hard to run pirate caves and things like that with only two. But we used to quarrel a good deal with the mainland children in winter. So it was perhaps just as well that there were none of them on the Big Half Moon. Claude and I never quarrelled. To be sure, Father didn't seem to have any relations except us. This used to puzzle Claude and me. Everybody on the mainland had relations. Why hadn't we? Was it because we lived on an island? We thought it would be so jolly to have an uncle and aunt and some cousins. Once we asked Father about it, but he looked so sorrowful that we wished we hadn't. He said it was all his fault. Claude and I didn't understand what he meant.

Dear [Friend's Name],
I hope you are doing well. Today, I am writing to share with you a wonderful experience I had yesterday. The weather was bright and breezy, perfect for flying a kite. My brother and I went to the large field near our house with a big, colourful red kite.
As soon as I let the kite catch the wind, it soared high into the sky. Feeling the tug of the string in my hands as it danced among the clouds gave me an incredible sense of freedom and joy. We spent hours racing across the grass and watching it fly higher and higher. It was truly a magical afternoon.

Yours lovingly,

One windy afternoon, a young boy named Rohan was flying his favourite blue kite. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind tangled his kite in the high branches of an old banyan tree. Unable to reach it, Rohan sat on a bench and began to cry bitterly. An old man, who lived in a nearby cottage, saw the weeping boy. He gently approached Rohan and brought out some colourful paper, bamboo sticks, and glue. With a warm smile, the old man taught Rohan how to craft a new, even more beautiful kite. Soon, they were flying the new kite together, their laughter filling the air. That day, Rohan not only got a new kite but also found a wonderful new friend.

He took out some oil from Ali's jar. As Abdul was pouring the oil several gold coins fell out from the jar. He became greedy. Abdul took out all the oil and the gold coins from Ali's jar. Then he replaced the oil in the jar from an oil-trader. Ali returned several months later. He did not find his coins. Abdul said he knew nothing of it. Ali went to the Khalifa. Khalifa Haroon-ul-Rashid heard Ali's complain. But there was no proof against Abdul. The Khalifa called an oil merchant. He tasted the oil and said it was two months old. Ali had been gone for seven months. He could not have put that oil in the jar. So, Abdul was caught. Ali got back his coins.

The Khalifa cleverly proved Abdul's guilt by having an expert confirm the replacement oil was much newer than Ali's departure date. Consequently, Abdul was caught and Ali recovered his wealth.

High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt. He was indeed very much admired.

One night there flew over the city a little Swallow. His friends had gone away to Egypt six weeks before, but he had stayed behind; then he decided to go away too. All day long he flew, and at night he arrived at the city. "Where shall I put up?" he said. Then he saw the statue on the tall column. "I will put up there," he cried; "it is a fine position with plenty of fresh air." So he alighted just between the feet of the Happy Prince.

"I have a golden bedroom," he said softly to himself as he looked round, and he prepared to go to sleep; but just as he was putting his head under his wing, a large drop of water fell on him... Then another drop fell... But before he had opened his wings, a third drop fell, and he looked up and saw— Ah! what did he see?

The eyes of the Happy Prince were filled with tears, and tears were running down his golden cheeks... "When I was alive and had a human heart," answered the statue, "I did not know what tears were, for I lived in the Palace of Sans-Souci, where sorrow was not allowed to enter... And now that I am dead they have set me up here so high that I can see all the ugliness and all the misery of my city, and though my heart is made of lead, I cannot choose but weep."

7. Character Sketch [8]

Write a paragraph in about eighty words on the character of the Happy Prince.

Suggested Answer:
The Happy Prince is the central character of Oscar Wilde's beautiful story. When he was alive, he lived a life of absolute luxury in a palace where sorrow was forbidden. He thought pleasure was happiness. However, after his death, his statue was placed high above the city. From there, he saw the real poverty, misery, and tears of his people. Despite his heart being made of lead, it melted with pity. He proved to be extremely selfless and compassionate, willingly giving away his golden leaves and precious jewel eyes to help the poor and needy.

8. Thematic Paragraph [7]

Write a paragraph in about eighty words on the theme of the story 'The Happy Prince'.

Suggested Answer:
The main theme of 'The Happy Prince' is the profound beauty of love, sacrifice, and compassion. The story teaches us that outward beauty and materialistic wealth, like fine gold and jewels, are ultimately meaningless compared to the warmth of a kind heart. The Prince and the Swallow both sacrifice their own lives and comforts to alleviate the suffering of the poor. God eventually rewards their selfless acts of charity, highlighting that spiritual beauty and empathy are the most precious things in the entire world.

Dear Diary,
Today was a very tiring and emotional day. My family finally moved from our old house in Kolkata to our new apartment in Delhi. Packing up all my things made me realize how many memories I had in that room. Leaving my old friends, the familiar streets, and my old school felt like leaving a piece of my heart behind. The new place is nice and big, but it feels strange and quiet. I don't know anyone here yet. I am feeling a bit lonely and homesick tonight. I hope I can make new friends soon and start feeling at home.
Goodnight.
