গল্পটি ১৯৩০ সালের এক সকালের, যেখানে স্বদেশ নামে এক যুবক নোংরা পোশাকে এবং খালি, কর্দমাক্ত পায়ে একটি রেলওয়ে স্টেশনে প্রবেশ করে। তার চোখ আগুনের মতো জ্বলছিল। ব্রিটিশ পুলিশ তখন বাংলার এক তরুণ স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামীকে খুঁজছিল। স্বদেশ একটি কলকাতা-গামী ট্রেনে উঠে কোণের একটি আসনে বসে এবং আগের সন্ধ্যার ঘটনা মনে করতে থাকে।
