Unit – I: The Three Fishes
Once upon a time, three fishes lived in a lake. They were very close friends. All three of them were very different from one another. The first one believed in fate. He thought what had to happen would happen. The second one was intelligent. He thought he knew how to solve a problem with his intelligence. The third one was the wise one. He thought long before taking any action.
একদা এক সময়ে, একটি হ্রদে তিনটি মাছ বাস করত। তারা খুব ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু ছিল। তিনজনই একে অপরের থেকে খুব আলাদা ছিল। প্রথমজন ভাগ্যে বিশ্বাস করত। সে ভাবত যা ঘটার তা ঘটবেই। দ্বিতীয়জন ছিল বুদ্ধিমান। সে ভাবত যে সে তার বুদ্ধি দিয়ে সমস্যার সমাধান করতে জানে। তৃতীয়জন ছিল জ্ঞানী। সে কোনো পদক্ষেপ নেওয়ার আগে দীর্ঘক্ষণ চিন্তা করত।
One day, the Wise Fish was playing in water. He overheard one fisherman talking to another. “Look at that one! What a big fish ! This lake is full of big fishes. Let us come tomorrow and catch them.” The Wise Fish hurriedly swam to his friends to tell the news. “Let’s leave this lake before those fishermen come back. A canal I know can take us to another lake,” the Wise Fish said.
একদিন, জ্ঞানী মাছটি জলে খেলা করছিল। সে একজন জেলেকে অন্যজনের সাথে কথা বলতে শুনল। “ওটার দিকে তাকাও! কী বড় মাছ! এই হ্রদটি বড় মাছে পূর্ণ। চলো আমরা কাল এসে তাদের ধরি।” জ্ঞানী মাছটি দ্রুত সাঁতার কেটে তার বন্ধুদের কাছে খবরটা জানাতে গেল। “চলো, ওই জেলেরা ফিরে আসার আগেই আমরা এই হ্রদ ছেড়ে চলে যাই। আমি একটি খাল চিনি যা আমাদের অন্য হ্রদে নিয়ে যেতে পারে,” জ্ঞানী মাছটি বলল।
The Intelligent Fish said, “I know what to do if the fishermen come and catch me.” The Fish who believed in fate said, “Whatever is to happen will happen. I was born in this lake and I am not going to leave it.” The Wise Fish did not want to risk his life. So he swam through the canal and went to the other lake.
বুদ্ধিমান মাছটি বলল, “জেলেরা এসে আমাকে ধরলে কী করতে হবে তা আমি জানি।” যে মাছটি ভাগ্যে বিশ্বাস করত সে বলল, “যা ঘটার ঘটবেই। আমি এই হ্রদে জন্মেছি এবং আমি এটা ছেড়ে যাব না।” জ্ঞানী মাছটি তার জীবনকে ঝুঁকির মধ্যে ফেলতে চায়নি। তাই সে খালের মধ্যে দিয়ে সাঁতার কেটে অন্য হ্রদে চলে গেল।
The fishermen came back the next morning. They cast their net. The two friends who stayed back were caught. The Intelligent Fish thought of a way to escape. He acted as if he were dead. The fisherman threw him back into the lake. But the other fish, who believed in fate, was still jumping in the net. The fisherman struck him dead.
পরদিন সকালে জেলেরা ফিরে এল। তারা তাদের জাল ফেলল। যে দুই বন্ধু পিছনে থেকে গিয়েছিল তারা ধরা পড়ল। বুদ্ধিমান মাছটি পালানোর একটি উপায় ভাবল। সে এমন ভান করল যেন সে মরে গেছে। জেলে তাকে হ্রদে আবার ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দিল। কিন্তু অন্য মাছটি, যে ভাগ্যে বিশ্বাস করত, সে তখনও জালে লাফাচ্ছিল। জেলে তাকে মেরে ফেলল।
Unit – II: Aquatic Animals
Hamid studies in class III. His father is a fisherman. Hamid loves to eat fish. Fishes live in water. They are aquatic animals. They can breathe in water with their gills. But when we take them out of water they die. The tail of a fish is hard. The fish changes its direction with its tail.
হামিদ তৃতীয় শ্রেণীতে পড়ে। তার বাবা একজন জেলে। হামিদ মাছ খেতে ভালোবাসে। মাছ জলে বাস করে। তারা জলজ প্রাণী। তারা তাদের ফুলকার সাহায্যে জলে শ্বাস নিতে পারে। কিন্তু যখন আমরা তাদের জল থেকে বের করে আনি, তারা মরে যায়। মাছের লেজ শক্ত হয়। মাছ তার লেজ দিয়ে দিক পরিবর্তন করে।
There are various types of fishes. Some live in fresh water while others live in saline water. Prawns also live in water. Prawns are not fish. They are insects. The body of a prawn is covered with a soft shell. A prawn has no backbone.
বিভিন্ন ধরণের মাছ আছে। কিছু মিঠা জলে বাস করে আবার কিছু নোনা জলে বাস করে। চিংড়িও জলে বাস করে। চিংড়ি মাছ নয়। তারা পোকামাকড়। চিংড়ির শরীর একটি নরম খোলস দিয়ে ঢাকা থাকে। চিংড়ির কোনো মেরুদণ্ড নেই।
One day Hamid heard the croaking of frogs. A frog came into their house. Hamid saw that the skin of the frog was rough and moist. Its hind legs are always folded. His father told him that the folded legs help the frog to jump. He also saw that the frog has toes like him, but the toes are joined with skin. Hamid’s father said that the webbed feet help it to swim. It lives in water and also on land.
একদিন হামিদ ব্যাঙের ডাক শুনতে পেল। একটি ব্যাঙ তাদের বাড়িতে ঢুকল। হামিদ দেখল যে ব্যাঙটির চামড়া খসখসে এবং আর্দ্র। এর পেছনের পা সবসময় ভাঁজ করা থাকে। তার বাবা তাকে বললেন যে ভাঁজ করা পা ব্যাঙকে লাফাতে সাহায্য করে। সে আরও দেখল যে ব্যাঙটির তার মতো পায়ের আঙ্গুল আছে, কিন্তু আঙ্গুলগুলো চামড়া দিয়ে জোড়া। হামিদের বাবা বললেন যে জালযুক্ত পা তাকে সাঁতার কাটতে সাহায্য করে। এটি জলে এবং স্থলেও বাস করে।

2. What We Learn
Think Before You Act
The Wise Fish thought about the problem and took action to save itself. This teaches us that it’s important to think ahead and make careful decisions, especially when we sense danger.
জ্ঞানী মাছটি সমস্যাটি নিয়ে ভেবেছিল এবং নিজেকে বাঁচাতে পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছিল। এটি আমাদের শেখায় যে আগে থেকে চিন্তা করা এবং সতর্ক সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, বিশেষ করে যখন আমরা বিপদ অনুভব করি।
Intelligence is Useful, but Wisdom is Better
The Intelligent Fish was clever enough to escape the net, but it still put itself in danger. The Wise Fish avoided the danger completely. This shows that while being clever is good, being wise and avoiding problems is even better.
বুদ্ধিমান মাছটি জাল থেকে পালানোর মতো যথেষ্ট চালাক ছিল, কিন্তু সে নিজেকে বিপদে ফেলেছিল। জ্ঞানী মাছটি বিপদটি পুরোপুরি এড়িয়ে গিয়েছিল। এটি দেখায় যে চালাক হওয়া ভালো, কিন্তু জ্ঞানী হওয়া এবং সমস্যা এড়িয়ে যাওয়া আরও ভালো।
Don’t Leave Everything to Fate
The third fish did nothing and believed whatever was meant to happen would happen. It lost its life because of this attitude. The story teaches us that we should not be passive; we must take action to protect ourselves.
