Lesson 8: The Journey of Wheels

Unit – I

Do you know Munni? Munni is a little girl. She studies in class III. Her father is a potter. She helps her father in making earthen pots. She goes to the market with her father in a bullock cart. Her father takes her to school on his bicycle everyday. Last Sunday she went to the village fair. She took a ride in the Giant Wheel and the Merry-go-round.

তুমি কি মুন্নিকে চেনো? মুন্নি একটি ছোট্ট মেয়ে। সে তৃতীয় শ্রেণীতে পড়ে। তার বাবা একজন কুমোর। সে তার বাবাকে মাটির পাত্র তৈরি করতে সাহায্য করে। সে তার বাবার সাথে গরুর গাড়িতে করে বাজারে যায়। তার বাবা তাকে প্রতিদিন সাইকেলে করে স্কুলে নিয়ে যায়। গত রবিবার সে গ্রামের মেলায় গিয়েছিল। সে নাগরদোলা এবং চরকিতে চড়েছিল।

Munni was very happy. She saw how we use the wheel in different ways. Without the wheel there would be no bicycles, cars or trains. Wheels are used in windmills and steam engines, too. Without the wheel her father would not be able to make pots, her mother would face trouble in drawing water from the well.

মুন্নি খুব খুশি হয়েছিল। সে দেখল আমরা চাকা বিভিন্নভাবে কীভাবে ব্যবহার করি। চাকা ছাড়া কোনো সাইকেল, গাড়ি বা ট্রেন থাকত না। চাকা বায়ুকল এবং বাষ্পীয় ইঞ্জিনেও ব্যবহৃত হয়। চাকা ছাড়া তার বাবা পাত্র তৈরি করতে পারত না, তার মা কুয়ো থেকে জল তুলতে সমস্যায় পড়ত।

Many factories run on wheels. But who invented the wheel? Nobody knows the answer. One of the first wheels used was the potter’s wheel. It happened 5500 years ago. Later man used the wheel for transport. The first means of transport was a wooden cart. Wheels changed our lives. We can now move easily and quickly from one place to another. We can easily transport heavy goods on wheels. Our physical work became less with the invention of wheels.

অনেক কারখানা চাকার উপর চলে। কিন্তু চাকা কে আবিষ্কার করেছিল? কেউই উত্তর জানে না। ব্যবহৃত প্রথম চাকাগুলির মধ্যে একটি ছিল কুমোরের চাকা। এটি ৫৫০০ বছর আগে ঘটেছিল। পরে মানুষ পরিবহনের জন্য চাকা ব্যবহার করে। প্রথম পরিবহন মাধ্যম ছিল একটি কাঠের গাড়ি। চাকা আমাদের জীবন বদলে দিয়েছে। আমরা এখন সহজে এবং দ্রুত এক জায়গা থেকে অন্য জায়গায় যেতে পারি। আমরা সহজেই চাকার উপর ভারী মালপত্র পরিবহন করতে পারি। চাকার আবিষ্কারের সাথে আমাদের শারীরিক পরিশ্রম কমে গেছে।

Unit – II

Once there were two sisters. They lived in a village. All day long the elder sister used to work at the spinning wheel. She was very hard working. But her younger sister was very lazy. One day the elder sister was sitting by the well. By mistake, she dropped the shuttle into the well. She began to weep.

একদা দুই বোন ছিল। তারা একটি গ্রামে বাস করত। বড় বোন সারাদিন চরকায় কাজ করত। সে খুব পরিশ্রমী ছিল। কিন্তু তার ছোট বোন খুব অলস ছিল। একদিন বড় বোন কুয়োর পাশে বসেছিল। ভুলবশত, সে মাকুটি কুয়োয় ফেলে দিল। সে কাঁদতে শুরু করল।

The poor little girl dived into the well. She wanted to get back the shuttle. Instead, she found herself in a meadow. The grass was green everywhere. Across the meadow she saw some apple trees. The trees were full of apples. As she looked up, each of the trees called out, ‘Shake me, shake me. The apples are all ripe’.

ছোট মেয়েটি কুয়োয় ঝাঁপ দিল। সে মাকুটি ফেরত পেতে চেয়েছিল। পরিবর্তে, সে নিজেকে একটি তৃণভূমিতে খুঁজে পেল। ঘাস সর্বত্র সবুজ ছিল। তৃণভূমির ওপারে সে কিছু আপেল গাছ দেখল। গাছগুলো আপেলে পূর্ণ ছিল। সে তাকাতেই, প্রতিটি গাছ ডেকে বলল, ‘আমাকে ঝাঁকাও, আমাকে ঝাঁকাও। সব আপেল পেকে গেছে’।

The old woman spoke very kindly. So, the little girl decided to stay with her. She looked after the old woman. The woman was very happy. But one day, she wanted to go home. The woman took her near a big door. At once the door opened. There was a shower of gold. Mother Moon said, “All these are yours. This is your reward.”

বৃদ্ধা খুব দয়ালুভাবে কথা বললেন। তাই, ছোট মেয়েটি তার সাথে থাকার সিদ্ধান্ত নিল। সে বৃদ্ধার দেখাশোনা করত। মহিলা খুব খুশি হলেন। কিন্তু একদিন, সে বাড়ি যেতে চাইল। মহিলা তাকে একটি বড় দরজার কাছে নিয়ে গেলেন। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে দরজা খুলে গেল। সেখানে সোনার বৃষ্টি হচ্ছিল। মা চাঁদ বললেন, “এই সব তোমার। এটা তোমার পুরস্কার।”

The door closed. The girl found herself in front of her house. A cock cried out- “Cock-a-doodle-do, Your golden girl comes to you.” Her mother wished the same luck for her younger daughter. So the younger daughter went and sat by the well. She was very lazy. She did not work hard like her sister. So, when she returned home empty-handed, the cock began to cry- “Cock-a-doodle-do, Your lazy girl comes to you.”

দরজা বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। মেয়েটি নিজেকে তার বাড়ির সামনে খুঁজে পেল। একটি মোরগ ডেকে উঠল- “কোক-এ-ডুডল-ডু, তোমার সোনার মেয়ে তোমার কাছে এসেছে।” তার মা তার ছোট মেয়ের জন্যও একই ভাগ্য চাইলেন। তাই ছোট মেয়ে কুয়োর পাশে গিয়ে বসল। সে খুব অলস ছিল। সে তার বোনের মতো কঠোর পরিশ্রম করত না। তাই, যখন সে খালি হাতে বাড়ি ফিরল, মোরগটি কাঁদতে শুরু করল- “কোক-এ-ডুডল-ডু, তোমার অলস মেয়ে তোমার কাছে এসেছে।”
