The Peacock and the Crane
Once upon a time, a peacock lived in a forest beside a lake. He was very proud of his beauty. Every day he used to go to the lake. There he looked at his own reflection in the water. “Oh ! What a beautiful bird am I ! My feathers and wings are so beautiful!” he used to say to himself.
একদা, এক ময়ূর এক হ্রদের পাশে একটি জঙ্গলে বাস করত। সে তার সৌন্দর্য নিয়ে খুব গর্বিত ছিল। প্রতিদিন সে হ্রদে যেত। সেখানে সে জলে নিজের প্রতিবিম্ব দেখত। “ওহ! আমি কী সুন্দর পাখি! আমার পালক এবং ডানাগুলো কত সুন্দর!” সে নিজেকে বলত।
One day, a crane came to live by the lake. The peacock saw the crane. He murmured, “A new visitor is here to stay. I must go and introduce myself to him”. So, the peacock walked to the lake. The crane was busy there. He was catching fish for lunch.
একদিন, একটি সারস সেই হ্রদের ধারে থাকতে এল। ময়ূরটি সারসটিকে দেখল। সে বিড়বিড় করে বলল, “একজন নতুন অতিথি এখানে থাকতে এসেছে। আমাকে গিয়ে তার সাথে পরিচয় করতে হবে”। তাই, ময়ূরটি হ্রদের দিকে হেঁটে গেল। সারসটি সেখানে ব্যস্ত ছিল। সে দুপুরের খাবারের জন্য মাছ ধরছিল।
The proud peacock spread out his colourful feathers for display. Then he said to the crane, “Hello, Mr. Crane! Welcome to the forest. I am your neighbour.”
গর্বিত ময়ূরটি তার রঙিন পালক প্রদর্শনের জন্য মেলে ধরল। তারপর সে সারসটিকে বলল, “নমস্কার, সারস মহাশয়! জঙ্গলে আপনাকে স্বাগতম। আমি আপনার প্রতিবেশী।”
“Thank you so much, Mr. Peacock,” the crane said. The peacock then mocked at the crane, “Why do you have such colourless feathers? You look so ordinary!”
“আপনাকে অনেক ধন্যবাদ, ময়ূর মহাশয়,” সারসটি বলল। ময়ূরটি তখন সারসটিকে উপহাস করে বলল, “আপনার এমন বর্ণহীন পালক কেন? আপনাকে দেখতে খুব সাধারণ লাগছে!”
The crane replied, “Yes. I don’t have beautiful feathers and wings like yours. But I can fly across the lake with the help of my wings. Can your feathers help you to fly?” There was no reply from the peacock. He felt ashamed and went away.
সারসটি উত্তর দিল, “হ্যাঁ। আপনার মতো সুন্দর পালক এবং ডানা আমার নেই। কিন্তু আমি আমার ডানার সাহায্যে হ্রদের ওপর দিয়ে উড়তে পারি। আপনার পালক কি আপনাকে উড়তে সাহায্য করতে পারে?” ময়ূরের কাছ থেকে কোনো উত্তর এল না। সে লজ্জিত বোধ করল এবং চলে গেল।

I am an eagle. I eat snake, hare, squirrel and fish. I am a bulbul. I eat berries and insects. I am an egret. I eat fish. A vulture can fly very high in the sky. A cuckoo can sing sweet notes. A peacock can dance in the rain. A hen can lay eggs.

2. What We Learn
Pride is Not a Virtue
The peacock was too proud of its beauty and looked down on the crane. The story teaches us that being too proud can make us unkind and lead to shame.
ময়ূরটি তার সৌন্দর্য নিয়ে খুব গর্বিত ছিল এবং সারসটিকে ছোট চোখে দেখত। গল্পটি আমাদের শেখায় যে অতিরিক্ত গর্ব আমাদের নির্দয় করে তুলতে পারে এবং লজ্জার কারণ হতে পারে।
Usefulness is More Important than Beauty
The peacock’s beautiful feathers couldn’t help it fly, but the crane’s ordinary wings were very useful. This shows that what we can do is often more important than how we look.
ময়ূরের সুন্দর পালক তাকে উড়তে সাহায্য করতে পারত না, কিন্তু সারসের সাধারণ ডানাগুলো খুব দরকারি ছিল। এটি দেখায় যে আমরা কেমন দেখতে তার চেয়ে আমরা কী করতে পারি তা প্রায়শই বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
Everyone Has a Unique Talent
The peacock was beautiful, and the crane could fly. Both birds had their own special abilities. We should respect the unique qualities in everyone and not compare ourselves to others.
ময়ূরটি ছিল সুন্দর, এবং সারসটি উড়তে পারত। উভয় পাখিরই নিজস্ব বিশেষ ক্ষমতা ছিল। আমাদের প্রত্যেকের মধ্যে থাকা অনন্য গুণাবলীকে সম্মান করা উচিত এবং নিজেদেরকে অন্যদের সাথে তুলনা করা উচিত নয়।
