Long Answer Questions (20)

1. Describe the state of England during the reign of King Uther-Pendragon.

During King Uther-Pendragon's reign, England was a land of peace and happiness. The King acted as a friend and protector to all his people and was fair to everyone. The citizens lived comfortably, tending their flocks and tilling their fields without fear.

2. Why was the period after the birth of the royal baby considered a "difficult time"?

It was a difficult time because both the King and the Queen died shortly after the baby boy was born. This left the throne vacant and the infant heir vulnerable. Many of the King's opponents were looking for an opportunity to seize the throne, leading to potential instability.

3. How did Merlin and Sir Ulfius ensure the safety of the infant Arthur?

Merlin and Sir Ulfius met Sir Ector the Trustworthy, a loyal subject, and entrusted him with the baby. They ordered him and his wife to bring up the child as their own son. By hiding his royal identity and placing him in a loyal household, they kept him safe from the King's enemies.

4. What was the condition of Britain during the eighteen years Arthur spent with Sir Ector?

Britain was in the grip of lawlessness and chaos. The barons were constantly fighting among themselves and plotting to capture the throne. The country was torn by bitter rivalry, and the people longed for the peace and prosperity they had enjoyed under Uther-Pendragon.

5. Describe the miracle of the sword in the stone found in the churchyard.

In a churchyard, people discovered a large stone with a magnificent sword fixed into it. Inscribed on the stone in gold letters was a message stating that whoever could pull out the sword was the rightful King of England by birth. Many barons tried to lift it but failed.

6. Why did the barons demand a trial even after Arthur pulled the sword?

The barons were angry and disappointed that a young, unknown boy had succeeded where they had failed. They were unwilling to accept him as King immediately and demanded a formal public test to prove his worth and the legitimacy of the miracle.

7. What happened on the bright May morning during the great trial?

During the trial, in front of a large crowd, the slender and young Arthur approached the stone. He lifted the sword easily and effortlessly. Seeing this undeniable proof, the crowd hailed him as their King, finally accepting his divine right to rule.

8. How did King Arthur demonstrate his commitment to justice after becoming King?

King Arthur fought many battles to establish order. His main goal was to ensure that no one, regardless of their power, could ill-treat even the humblest of his subjects. He aimed to restore the fairness and protection that his father had once provided.

9. Describe the appearance of the arm that rose from the lake.

As Arthur approached the deep lake with Merlin, a beautiful arm rose from the water. It was adorned with golden bracelets. The hand held a magnificent sword set with precious rubies and emeralds, which was the Excalibur.

10. What were the conditions Merlin set for possessing the Excalibur?

Merlin stated that only an honest and fearless knight who dedicated himself to protecting the common people could possess the Excalibur. It was not just a weapon but a symbol of virtue and selfless service to the kingdom.

11. What solemn declaration did King Arthur make upon receiving Excalibur?

Upon accepting the enchanted sword, King Arthur declared that he would never use the magic sword for any personal benefit. This showed his integrity and his focus on using his power only for the welfare of his people.

12. Why were the greedy barons unhappy with King Arthur’s rule?

The greedy barons were unhappy because King Arthur was gentle and just. His fair rule prevented them from exploiting the poor or gaining power through corruption and violence, which conflicted with their selfish interests.

13. Describe the pavilion and the Round Table mentioned in the text.

The pavilion was a richly gilded structure. In the middle of the room stood a huge, round table made of oak. It was large enough to seat fifty people and became the gathering place for the King’s most devoted and loyal knights.

14. What was the significance of the Round Table in Arthur’s court?

The Round Table symbolized equality and unity. Since it was round, no one sat at the "head," implying that all knights were equal in their service to the King and the country. It was where they gathered to discuss the protection of the kingdom.

15. How did King Arthur’s reign end regarding the magic sword?

As Arthur grew old, he realized his time was ending. He gave Excalibur to a trusted knight and commanded him to throw it back into the lake. A beautiful arm rose, caught the sword, and took it back into the depths, signaling the end of his magical era.

16. Analyze the character of Merlin based on the story.

Merlin is depicted as a wise, prophetic, and protective figure. He was a visionary who foresaw the trouble in Britain and took steps to save the heir. He acted as a mentor to Arthur, guiding him to his destiny and providing him with the magical tools needed to rule justly.

17. Compare the rule of Uther-Pendragon and King Arthur.

Both kings brought peace and prosperity to England and were loved by the common people. However, Arthur’s rule involved more struggle against internal rivals (the barons) and had a more legendary/magical quality with the inclusion of Excalibur and the Round Table.

18. What does the story tell us about "Right of Birth" versus "Right of Action"?

While the inscription said the king is chosen by "right of birth," Arthur had to prove himself through action—by pulling the sword and later by ruling justly. The story suggests that a true king is defined not just by his bloodline but by his character and ability to protect his people.

19. Why did Arthur need a new sword after losing his first one?

Arthur needed a new sword not just for battle, but as a symbol of his divine right and his role as a protector. Merlin led him to Excalibur to provide him with a weapon that matched his integrity and helped him maintain peace in the kingdom.

20. What is the central theme of "A King’s Tale"?

The central theme is the triumph of justice, honesty, and selfless leadership over greed and chaos. It highlights how a true leader protects the weak and uses power for the common good rather than personal gain, as exemplified by Arthur’s life and his use of Excalibur.

CLASS 5 BUTTERFLY

Lesson 4: Memory in Marble

1. Let’s Read (চলো পড়ি)

Tarun, a class five student, was given a task to write a paragraph on the Taj Mahal. Worried, he asked his grandfather for help. His grandfather told him the story of Prince Khurram, son of Jehangir. One day, Khurram saw an extremely beautiful girl, Arjumand Banu Begum, in the Meena Bazaar and wanted to marry her.

Prince Khurram was later known as Shah Jahan and became emperor in 1628. Arjumand Banu Begum was renamed Mumtaz Mahal, meaning “the brightest crown of the world.” When Mumtaz was on her deathbed, Shah Jahan promised her he would not marry again and would build the most beautiful mausoleum over her grave.

Shah Jahan was so sad after her death that he ordered the court to mourn for two years. He then started building the monument beside the river Yamuna. It took 22 years and 22,000 workers to build. The Taj Mahal was built entirely out of white marble. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, his body was placed next to the grave of Mumtaz Mahal. It is now considered one of the seven wonders of the World.

2. What We Learn (আমরা যা শিখি)

The Power of a Promise

Shah Jahan built the magnificent Taj Mahal to keep a promise he made to his dying wife. This teaches us the importance of keeping our promises and honoring our commitments.

Love and Memory

The Taj Mahal is a symbol of Shah Jahan’s deep love for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It shows how art and architecture can be used to create a timeless memorial to remember a loved one forever.

Hard Work and Dedication

Building the Taj Mahal took 22 years and 22,000 workers. This incredible feat of construction teaches us that great things can be achieved through long-term dedication, patience, and the hard work of many people.

Lesson: A King’s Tale

Class: VIII | Subject: Blossoms VIII

Many hundreds of years ago, England was ruled by a king called Uther-Pendragon. The king, who was friend and protector to all his people, was fair to everyone. The people of Britain lived in peace and happiness, tending their flocks and tilling their fields.
King Uther-Pendragon had married the beautiful Lady Igraine, and had a son. This child was the heir to the royal throne. The king and the queen died soon after the baby boy was born. It was a difficult time. Many of the king’s opponents were looking to seize the throne.
King Uther-Pendragon had two wise counsellors—Merlin, a prophet and a magician, and the brave knight, Sir Ulfius. When the king and the queen were no more, the two counsellors met Sir Ector the Trustworthy, a loyal subject of the king. They placed in his hands a baby wrapped in a scarlet cloak. Merlin said, “We order you and your wife to bring up this child as though he were your own son.” “The boy is to be called Arthur,” Sir Ulfius said.
As Merlin and Sir Ulfius had feared, trouble broke out in Britain after the passing away of the king. The barons were fighting among themselves and plotting to capture the throne. Britain was in the grip of lawlessness.
In the home of Sir Ector, Arthur, the son of the late king, was spending his boyhood in happiness and safety. Eighteen years passed. Britain was torn by bitter rivalry. The people longed for the old days of peace and prosperity under Uther-Pendragon.
One day, in a churchyard, people found a large stone on which was fixed a magnificent sword. Upon the stone, in gold letters, was inscribed, ” whoever pulls out this sword is by right of birth, the king of England.” Immediately, the eager barons jostled among themselves to lift the sword. None succeeded.
It was Arthur, at the age of eighteen, who succeeded in lifting the sword. The barons were angry and disappointed. They demanded a test. Upon a bright May morning, a great trial took place. In front of everyone, Arthur, slender and young, lifted the sword easily. The crowd hailed him as the king.
King Arthur fought battles so that no one could ill-treat the humblest of his subjects. King Arthur had lost his royal sword in a battle. One day, Merlin took him to a deep lake. As Arthur approached, a beautiful arm with golden bracelets rose from the water. The hand held a sword set with rubies and emeralds.
“This is the Excalibur”, Merlin said. “Only an honest and fearless knight who protects the common people can possess this sword.” King Arthur accepted the enchanted sword. “I shall never use this magic sword for any personal benefit,” King Arthur declared.
King Arthur could gift peace and prosperity to England. The greedy barons were unhappy because he was gentle and just. He married the beautiful Lady Guinevere. On the wedding day, Merlin took him to a richly gilded pavilion. In the middle of the room was a huge, round, oak table, capable of seating fifty people. This was the famous round table around which gathered King Arthur’s devoted knights.
King Arthur ruled for many happy years, and grew old with time. The king gave his magic sword, the Excalibur, to a trusted knight. At the king’s command, the knight threw the sword into the lake. A beautiful arm arose from the lake, caught the sword and disappeared into the green depths of water.

The merchant declared the oil was fresh, proving it couldn't be the old oil Ali left years ago. This exposed Abdul's lie. Abdul was punished, and Ali recovered his gold coins.
