The Wind Cap

Complete Side-by-Side Paragraph Translation

There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea. “Child, what do you know of sailing?” she would say. “You’re a farmer’s son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea.”
Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother. So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.
One day, he had been walking behind the plough. He all but ran over a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt. He picked the turtle up and set it on his head where he knew it would be safe. When he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head. To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed.
“I thank you for your kindness, tell me your heart’s desire and I’ll grant it to you for saving my life,” said the fairy. Jon bowed back but said nothing. Although his heart yearned to go out to the sea, he did not express his wish.
The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, “I see you wish to go sailing”. Jon’s face answered for him.
“Since you put me on your head like a hat to keep me safe, I shall give you a different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire. A cap full of wind. But there’s one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off.”
Then with a blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving a striped cap behind. Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother.
“No good will come of the wind cap,” she said. But the lad would have none of her cautions. The very next day, putting on the sailor’s cap, he ran off to the sea. On seeing a ship anchored near the shore, he requested the captain to take him along. Thus began his first ever sea voyage!
Well, the wind cap worked as the fairy had said but that one condition prevailed! Now that was both bad and good. It was bad because Jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at bedtime. And it was good because neither could he lose the cap nor could it be stolen from him.
Since it was wind that sailors called for, and wind that Jon could supply he soon became very popular. When he twisted the cap he could summon the east wind and the west wind. He could also turn it to call both the north as well as the south wind. The captain would therefore never part with his prized sailor and let him ashore.
For a year and a day, young Jon did not set foot on land. He saw nothing but the churning of the waves. Soon there grew in his heart a strong desire to see the land.
“Oh, let me go ashore just for one day,” he begged the captain when they had sighted land. He promised he would return but the captain was unmoved. However, Jon could not stop dreaming of the land.
One quiet afternoon, he lay fast asleep and fell to dreaming again. Unknown to him, the ship stood offshore from his old farm. In Jon’s dream the seasons turned rapidly and as each turned, so did Jon in his bed. Consequently, the cap on his head twisted round and about. It called up a squall from the clear sky that hit the ship without a warning.
The wind had been whirling about the boat tearing the sails and snapping the spars. “It’s his fault,” the sailors cried. They shouted in anger and fear and tried to rip the cap off his head.
Well, they were unsuccessful, for it was a fairy cap. They pulled it and twisted it and so the squall became a storm, the mightiest they had ever seen. The captain ordered his men to bring Jon before him. In anger, he grabbed him by the tail of his striped cap, twisted him thrice and flung him out to the sea. But the winds called up by the cap spun the ship three times around.
As Jon went under the waves, the cap came off his head. Soon the storm stopped, and Jon swam ashore. The cap followed him. When he got to the land, Jon picked up the cap and ran home to his mother and farm.
Again in the winter, when the snow lay heavy on the fields, he began to dream of the sea. Jon went to the wardrobe, got out the fairy cap and stared at it for a long moment. Tucking it in his shirt, he ran out to the field. He placed the wind cap under a stone where he knew the fairy man would find it. Then he left again for the seas.
For the rest of his life, Jon spent half the year on a ship and half on the shore till at last he owned his own boat and a hundred acre farm land. From then on he came to be known as Captain Turtle for he was as much at home on the water as he was on the land.

Long Answer Questions (20 Items)

1. Describe the conversation between Jon and his mother regarding his desire to be a sailor.

Solution: When Jon expressed his wish to be a sailor, his mother discouraged him. she argued that as a farmer's son, he was well-acquainted with the rhythms of the farm—the changing seasons and the smell of the soil—but he lacked any knowledge or experience of the sea. She used his heritage as a reason to keep him on the land, implying that he belonged to the soil and not the water.

2. How did Jon's kindness toward the turtle change his life?

Solution: While ploughing, Jon found a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt. Instead of ignoring it or accidentally running over it, he picked it up and placed it on his head for safety. This act of kindness was rewarded when the turtle transformed into a fairy man. The fairy man granted Jon a magic wind cap, which finally allowed him to fulfill his dream of becoming a sailor and embarking on sea voyages.

3. Why did the fairy man give Jon a "wind cap" specifically?

Solution: The fairy man could read Jon's heart and knew he yearned to go sailing. Since Jon had protected the fairy by placing him on his head "like a hat," the fairy decided to give him a different kind of cap in return. He chose a wind cap because wind is the thing sailors desire most, and this specific cap would give Jon the power to control the winds, making him a valuable sailor.

4. Explain the unique features and the warning associated with the wind cap.

Solution: The wind cap was a striped cap that contained the power of the winds. By twisting it, the wearer could summon the East, West, North, and South winds. However, there was a strict condition: no human hand could ever take it off. This meant the cap was permanently attached to Jon's head as long as he was on the ship, providing both a magical advantage and a physical restriction.

5. "Now that was both bad and good." Explain this statement in the context of Jon's cap.

Solution: The condition that the cap could not be removed by human hands had two sides. It was "bad" because Jon was forced to wear it constantly, even in front of his captain or while sleeping, which was uncomfortable and socially awkward. It was "good" because the cap was secure; he could never lose it in a storm, nor could it be stolen by jealous sailors, ensuring his magical power remained with him.

6. How did Jon become a "prized sailor" for the captain?

Solution: In the era of sailing ships, wind was the most critical resource. Since Jon could summon any wind the ship needed by simply twisting his cap, he became indispensable. He could provide the exact wind direction required for the journey. Because of this unique ability, the captain valued him so highly that he refused to let Jon go ashore, keeping him on the ship for over a year.

7. Describe Jon's feelings after being at sea for a year and a day.

Solution: Although Jon loved the sea, after a year and a day of seeing nothing but the "churning of the waves," he developed a deep, intense longing for the land. He missed the soil and his farm. When they finally sighted land, he begged the captain to let him go ashore for just one day, showing that his love for the sea had been tempered by homesickness.

8. What happened during the "quiet afternoon" when Jon fell asleep?

Solution: While the ship was anchored offshore near Jon's old farm, Jon fell into a deep sleep and dreamed of the changing seasons. As he tossed and turned in his dream, the magic cap on his head twisted as well. This accidental twisting summoned a violent squall from a clear sky. The wind began whirling around the boat, tearing sails and snapping the ship's spars, putting the entire crew in danger.

9. Why did the sailors blame Jon for the storm, and what did they try to do?

Solution: The sailors realized that the sudden, unnatural storm was connected to Jon's magic cap. In their anger and fear, they blamed him for the destruction of the ship's sails and spars. They tried to forcibly rip the cap off his head to stop the wind, but they were unsuccessful because the fairy's magic prevented any human hand from removing it.

10. Describe the captain's reaction to the storm caused by Jon.

Solution: The captain was furious. He ordered his men to bring Jon to him. In his rage, he grabbed Jon by the tail of his striped cap and twisted him three times. He then flung Jon out into the sea. Ironically, the very act of twisting Jon and the cap further intensified the winds, causing the ship to spin three times before Jon hit the water.

11. How did the cap finally come off Jon's head?

Solution: The fairy's condition was that no "human hand" could take the cap off. When the captain threw Jon into the sea, Jon went under the waves. It was the power of the water and the fact that he was no longer on the ship that allowed the cap to finally slip off his head. Once the cap was off, the storm ceased immediately.

12. What did Jon do after he reached the shore following the storm?

Solution: After swimming ashore, Jon saw that the cap had followed him. He picked it up and ran straight home to his mother and his farm. He had experienced the dangers of the sea and the burden of the magic cap, and his first instinct was to return to the safety and familiarity of his home.

13. Why did Jon decide to return the cap to the fairy man?

Solution: During the winter, Jon felt the pull of the sea again. However, he realized that the wind cap was a heavy responsibility and had caused great trouble. He took the cap to the field and placed it under a stone where he knew the fairy man would find it. By doing this, he gave up the absolute power over the winds, choosing to return to the sea on his own terms.

14. How did Jon balance his life in his later years?

Solution: Jon eventually found a way to satisfy both his love for the sea and his connection to the land. He spent half the year on a ship and the other half on his farm. This balance allowed him to be successful in both worlds, eventually owning his own boat and a hundred-acre farm.

15. What is the significance of the name "Captain Turtle"?

Solution: The name "Captain Turtle" is significant because it reflects Jon's dual nature. Just as a turtle is comfortable both on land and in water, Jon was "as much at home on the water as he was on the land." It also serves as a tribute to the tiny turtle that started his entire journey.

16. Discuss the theme of "obeying one's mother" in the story.

Solution: Initially, Jon is described as a boy who "always obeyed his mother." Even when his heart was heavy, he respected her wishes and worked on the farm. However, the story suggests that while respect is important, one's inner calling (the sea) cannot be suppressed forever. Jon eventually finds a way to honor his nature while still maintaining his roots on the farm.

17. How does the story portray the relationship between humans and the supernatural?

Solution: The relationship is portrayed as one of mutual respect and consequence. Jon saves the fairy man, and the fairy man rewards him. However, the supernatural gift (the cap) comes with rules and unintended consequences (the storm). It shows that human desires, when aided by magic, can become uncontrollable and dangerous if not handled with wisdom.

18. Analyze the character of the ship's captain.

Solution: The captain is portrayed as a practical and somewhat selfish man. He values Jon only for the wind he can provide and refuses to let him go ashore, ignoring Jon's emotional needs. When the storm hits, he quickly turns to violence, throwing Jon overboard to save his ship, showing that his primary concern is his vessel and his own authority.

19. What role does "dreaming" play in the story's plot?

Solution: Dreaming is the catalyst for the story's climax. Jon's dream of the land and the turning seasons causes him to physically move, which in turn twists the magic cap. This shows that Jon's subconscious connection to the land was so strong that it manifested physically, triggering the magic of the cap and leading to his eventual return to the shore.

20. What is the moral lesson of "The Wind Cap"?

Solution: The story teaches that while we may have great ambitions and even receive "magical" help, we must remain connected to our roots. It also suggests that true happiness comes from balance—Jon wasn't fully happy just on the farm or just at sea; he found fulfillment only when he learned to live in both worlds.

Common Conceptual Mistakes & Pitfalls

Common Student MistakeCorrect Understanding
Thinking Jon was naturally a sailor who hated farming.Jon was a farmer's son who "obeyed his mother" and worked with a "heavy heart," showing he respected his roots even while dreaming of the sea.
Believing the Wind Cap itself was "evil" or caused the storm intentionally. The storm was caused by Jon's restless dreaming (turning in sleep) and the sailors' violent attempts to pull the cap off, which twisted the winds.
Assuming Jon lost the cap forever when the Captain threw him into the sea.The cap came off only when Jon went under the waves (meeting the condition of no human hand removing it), and it followed him back to shore.
Confusion over why he is called "Captain Turtle."It is a metaphor: like a turtle, he became equally at home on water and land, spending half the year on each.

Power Revision Summary

  • THE GIFT

Jon saves a tiny green turtle (a fairy man) by placing it on his head for safety. In return, he receives a striped wind cap.

  • THE RULE

The cap allows Jon to summon winds (East, West, North, South) but carries a curse/condition: No human hand can ever take it off.

  • THE CONFLICT

Jon becomes too valuable to the Captain. Because he can control the wind, the Captain refuses to let him go ashore for a year and a day.

  • THE CLIMAX

Jon dreams of home; his tossing turns the cap, summoning a mighty storm. The sailors blame Jon and the Captain flings him into the sea.

  • THE ENDING

Jon returns the cap to the fairy man. He achieves balance, becoming Captain Turtle—owner of a boat and a 100-acre farm.

The Feynman Method (Explain to a 5-Year-Old)

"Once there was a boy named Jon who lived on a farm but dreamed of the big blue ocean. One day, he saved a tiny green turtle, and—POOF!—it turned into a magic fairy man! To say thank you, the fairy gave Jon a magic striped hat. This hat could call the wind to push ships! But there was a rule: no human could ever take the hat off. Jon went on many adventures, but he learned that having too much power can be tricky. In the end, he learned to love both the land and the sea, spending half his time as a farmer and half as a brave captain. He became just like the turtle he saved—happy in both worlds!"
