Lesson: The Riddle

The king of Kings, Emperor Akbar, who ruled over India was a great lover of arts, sciences, literature and music. One day, on a fine morning, he was walking in his vast garden. He had his most trusted and favourite minister Birbal with him. But the great Emperor Akbar did not have peace of mind. Wise Birbal, noticing this, asked Akbar, ‘O great and powerful King, what is troubling you?’

Akbar replied, ‘Birbal, my dearest friend, you are right. There is indeed a riddle that has been troubling me. I am troubled because I cannot find an answer to a simple question- what is the fastest thing on this planet?’ Birbal said, ‘Is that all, your Majesty? Call your courtiers together. Let us see if one of them can answer. If not, then I am certain I can tell you of the fastest thing on the planet.’

আকবর উত্তর দিলেন, ‘বীরবল, আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু, তুমি ঠিক বলেছ। সত্যিই একটি ধাঁধা আমাকে কষ্ট দিচ্ছে। আমি একটি সাধারণ প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজে পাচ্ছি না বলে আমি চিন্তিত – এই গ্রহের দ্রুততম জিনিসটি কী?’ বীরবল বললেন, ‘শুধু এইটুকুই, মহারাজ? আপনার সভাসদদের একসাথে ডাকুন। দেখা যাক তাদের মধ্যে কেউ উত্তর দিতে পারে কিনা। যদি না পারে, তবে আমি নিশ্চিত যে আমি আপনাকে এই গ্রহের দ্রুততম জিনিসটির কথা বলতে পারব।’

At the King’s court, many heard the question. Most were puzzled. Some said, ‘bullock carts’, others said, ‘horses’. But Birbal just smiled at them. After everyone had failed, Birbal offered to answer. He said, ‘Your Majesty, it is the human mind!’ To prove it, he said, ‘Let the people of our kingdom present a problem to me. I shall show you how fast I can solve it using the powers of my mind alone.’

রাজার দরবারে অনেকেই প্রশ্নটি শুনেছিলেন। বেশিরভাগই হতবাক হয়েছিলেন। কেউ কেউ বলল, ‘বলদ গাড়ি’, অন্যরা বলল, ‘ঘোড়া’। কিন্তু বীরবল কেবল তাদের দিকে হাসলেন। সবাই ব্যর্থ হওয়ার পর, বীরবল উত্তর দেওয়ার প্রস্তাব দিলেন। তিনি বললেন, ‘মহারাজ, এটি মানুষের মন!’ এটি প্রমাণ করার জন্য, তিনি বললেন, ‘আমাদের রাজ্যের মানুষ আমার কাছে একটি সমস্যা উপস্থাপন করুক। আমি আপনাকে দেখাব যে আমি কেবল আমার মনের শক্তি ব্যবহার করে কত দ্রুত তার সমাধান করতে পারি।’

A man came forward. He claimed that his neighbour had sold him his well. Now, when he wanted to draw water, his neighbour wanted to charge him money for it. The neighbour argued that he had just sold him the well, not the water in it. Birbal smiled and said, ‘I think the solution is rather simple. It is your well now, your neighbour should be paying you rent for keeping water in your well.’ The neighbour realised that he was outwitted and withdrew his claim immediately. All around, people were amazed at the wisdom of Birbal and the speed of the human mind. Truly, there was nothing faster than it.

একজন লোক এগিয়ে এল। সে দাবি করল যে তার প্রতিবেশী তাকে তার কুয়ো বিক্রি করে দিয়েছে। এখন, যখন সে জল তুলতে চাইল, তখন তার প্রতিবেশী তার জন্য টাকা দাবি করতে চাইল। প্রতিবেশী যুক্তি দেখাল যে সে কেবল কুয়ো বিক্রি করেছে, তার ভেতরের জল নয়। বীরবল হেসে বললেন, ‘আমার মনে হয় সমাধানটি বেশ সহজ। এটি এখন আপনার কুয়ো, আপনার প্রতিবেশীর উচিত আপনার কুয়োতে জল রাখার জন্য আপনাকে ভাড়া দেওয়া।’ প্রতিবেশী বুঝতে পারল যে সে হেরে গেছে এবং সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তার দাবি প্রত্যাহার করে নিল। চারপাশে সবাই বীরবলের জ্ঞান এবং মানুষের মনের গতি দেখে অবাক হয়ে গেল। সত্যিই, এর চেয়ে দ্রুত আর কিছুই ছিল না।
