Unit I

When you and I are together you often ask me questions about many things and I try to answer them. Now that you are at Mussoorie and I am in Allahabad we cannot have these talks. I am therefore going to write to you from time to time short accounts of the story of our earth and the many countries, great and small, into which it is divided.

যখন তুমি আর আমি একসাথে থাকি, তুমি প্রায়ই আমাকে অনেক কিছু নিয়ে প্রশ্ন করো এবং আমি তার উত্তর দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করি। এখন তুমি মুসৌরিতে আছো আর আমি এলাহাবাদে, তাই আমাদের মধ্যে সেইসব কথাবার্তা হতে পারে না। তাই আমি সময়ে সময়ে তোমাকে আমাদের পৃথিবী এবং তার বিভিন্ন দেশ, ছোট ও বড়, নিয়ে ছোট ছোট বিবরণ লিখব।

You know of course that our earth is very, very old—millions and millions of years old. And for a long long time there were no men or women living in it. Before the men came there were only animals, and before the animals there was a time when no kind of life existed on the earth. It is difficult to imagine this world of ours, which is so full today of all kinds of animals and men, to be without them.

তুমি অবশ্যই জানো যে আমাদের পৃথিবী অনেক, অনেক পুরোনো—লক্ষ লক্ষ বছরের পুরোনো। এবং অনেক দিন ধরে এখানে কোনো পুরুষ বা মহিলা বাস করত না। মানুষ আসার আগে কেবল পশুরা ছিল, এবং পশুদের আগে এমন এক সময় ছিল যখন পৃথিবীতে কোনো প্রাণের অস্তিত্ব ছিল না। আমাদের এই পৃথিবী, যা আজ সব ধরনের পশু ও মানুষে পরিপূর্ণ, তাদের ছাড়া কল্পনা করা কঠিন।

Unit II

You read history in books. But in old times when men did not exist surely no books could have been written. How then can we find out what happened then? We have rocks and mountains and seas and stars and rivers and deserts and fossils of old animals. These… are our books for the earth’s early story. And the real way to understand this story is… to go to the great Book of Nature itself.

তুমি বইয়ে ইতিহাস পড়ো। কিন্তু পুরানো দিনে যখন মানুষ ছিল না, তখন নিশ্চয়ই কোনো বই লেখা হয়নি। তাহলে আমরা কীভাবে জানব তখন কী ঘটেছিল? আমাদের কাছে শিলা, পর্বত, সমুদ্র, তারা, নদী, মরুভূমি এবং পুরানো প্রাণীর জীবাশ্ম আছে। এইগুলোই পৃথিবীর প্রথম দিকের গল্পের জন্য আমাদের বই। এবং এই গল্পটি বোঝার আসল উপায় হলো… প্রকৃতির মহান বইয়ের কাছে যাওয়া।

Every little stone that you see… may be a little page in nature’s book and may be able to tell you something if you only knew how to read it. To be able to read any language… you have to learn its alphabet. So also you must learn the alphabet of nature before you can read her story in her books of stone and rock. If you see a little round shiny pebble, does it not tell you something? How did it get round and smooth and shiny? It will tell you its story if you have good eyes to see and ears to hear it.

তুমি যে প্রতিটি ছোট পাথর দেখো… তা প্রকৃতির বইয়ের একটি ছোট পৃষ্ঠা হতে পারে এবং তুমি যদি শুধু পড়তে জানতে তবে তা তোমাকে কিছু বলতে পারত। যেকোনো ভাষা পড়তে হলে… তোমাকে তার বর্ণমালা শিখতে হবে। সেরকমই, প্রকৃতির গল্প তার পাথর ও শিলার বইয়ে পড়ার আগে তোমাকে প্রকৃতির বর্ণমালা শিখতে হবে। যদি তুমি একটি ছোট গোলাকার চকচকে নুড়ি দেখো, তা কি তোমাকে কিছু বলে না? এটি কীভাবে গোলাকার, মসৃণ এবং চকচকে হলো? তোমার যদি দেখার জন্য ভালো চোখ এবং শোনার জন্য কান থাকে তবে এটি তোমাকে তার গল্প বলবে।
